Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wow so the player has a right to refuse an offer that is above the qualifying offer? I'm learning a lot today, ty for your input.

Right. The QO is the offering of a one year deal at a specified salary. That gives the offering team the right to match any other (usually multi-year) contract offer sheets from other teams that the player signs. And the team with the right to match has three days to decide whether to match, or not.

But obviously, a player doesn't have to sign any of those deals offered by other teams. Otherwise players could get completely screwed by ridiculously low lowball offers they'd be forced to accept.

The reality with Thompson is that other teams know we'll match, which pretty much makes it pointless for them to tie up lots of money for three days while he sits on their offer. That may well mean he doesn't get any decent offers.

Thank you for this feedback, I went to wikipedia and it didn't even go into this sort of depth on it.

You're welcome. I'm not the cap expert some other guys are, but this is one of the more straightforward issues.

But I think it illustrates a potential flaw in the argument that we should just wait until he gets an offer, and match it. He might not get another offer that he's willing to sign. My guess is he doesn't.

ETA:

There's a lot of stuff I've learned from other guys since posting here. If someone is wrong, it gets spotted/corrected so you can know you're getting good stuff if you pay attention.

Really, it's a great site for learning about the NBA, and why so many guys here can accurately call out members of the media who get it wrong.

So if he doesn't get an offer. What then? It seems like the Cavs have all the leverage.

Yes, it's a bit more of a balancing act for Griffin than I thought. Hopefully that rumored 80 mil offer is enough to seal the deal. It should be enough money where his agent just tells him that it's as good as he's gonna get because Cleveland is the only team probably willing to go all in for him. 80 is not great for the ownership, but it looks a lot better than 90 million would.

I'm sure the Nets were really optimistic when their owner started spending massive sums but things have a way of going not how you planned. I realize our guys are younger but we still have to be sensible.

But he's got some too. He has the option of just playing one year for the qualifying amount, and then becoming a UFA next year.

What that means first is that next summer, we would no longer have the right to match and keep him automatically. And if he thinks we screwed him, or maybe if he decides he wants a shot at starting, he might leave even if our offer is just as good.

Second, the cap explodes next year, and there will be a ton of teams flush with cap space, but without a lot of top tier FA talent available. That's a recipe for the some of the biggest overpays in history.

So, TT's leverage is rolling the dice for next summer and hoping for a much larger payday from someone.

If he doesn't get an offer from some other team he's bound to the qualifying offer for this year and then becomes a UFA.......that doesn't bother me that much. If he is so stupid as to turn down an $80 mil offer from the Cavs, then good luck in the UFA market next year. I personally hope they don't over pay for him. To me, Love and Shumpert were the key signings. At some point I have to think that LBJ and Rich Paul talk some sense into this guy. If not, oh well.

Sometimes it takes a while to feel T.Ts before you can give a certain number to them. So once Rich Paul is done feeling T.T we will get a better idea where they are in talks. Thank god The Love Shump train is in place.

Not one to normally overreact, but fuck this guy. If I'm the Cavs, I'm pretty much done. Let him try to go out and find a better offer. Ridiculous.

Thompson must want to be paid as much or more than Kyrie (5 years, 90 million) and that's insanity. Starting to get worried about his ego and hoping he doesnt get a big contract and get fat and happy.

TT's issue now is he has lost most of his leverage for this off-season.

We already signed Love and Shumpert (our two other off-season priorities) and Green just got less money than TT wants.

The only power play they have left is playing on the QO, which no one really wants to do in TT's camp IMO. You can do that as a starter but not as a reserve. It's really risky with Love back and PF options on the market with Haywood's deal.

I'm sure the parties will get back together and work it out but I hope the stalemate is Griffin telling them he's not getting more money than Green did. 70-75 million is still a ton of additional money (from where we were last year) and my guess on what we'd like to pay him.

TT was one of my favorite players last year; grit, hustle, and blue-collar work ethic are admirable characteristics in all players. But now I perceive him as an arrogant, delusional punk. I commend the Cavs' management for not impulsively giving in...let him slink back with his tail between his legs and be humbled into signing something only mildly outrageous.

Lock up Delly and JR in the interim.
