Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I hope the Cavs have taken the 5 years , 80 million dollars offer off the table, if it was ever on the table. The QO would save us a ton of money.

Then next year the Cavs can prioritize Mozgov's re-signing and then if there's money left over we can grab Tristan.

The Cavs have not taken any offer off the table. I have a more informative piece on the Cavs front court situation coming on the main page soon. Maybe tomorrow.

perhaps some of the parties have been on vacation as it summer and there is no basketball being played for another 3/4 months. just throwing it out there

I've been told that the chances of TT playing out next season on the QO are slim to none. He's going to get his money from the Cavs, but most of the ongoing talks are about how much is getting backloaded. Cavs obviously want to do that as much as possible to lessen the luxury tax blow for this year.

We cant back load, we are over the cap. Only 10.5% increases per a year.

They can determine how his annual raises kick in, which is essentially backloading in this version of the CBA. Still ends up making a difference with luxury tax.

We cant back loan, we are over the cap.

This. He should've struck while the iron was hot. Now he's waiting for the sun, the moon, and the stars to align, while we're sitting here holding our peckers.

Someone made the comment about how weird the Canadian locker room would be with Olynk and Tristan both in it. Several different irony levels at work here...
Awkward how? Loves injury opened up minutes in the playoffs for Thompson and it was that performance that has driven his requested price tag. He should cost bump Olynyk, frankly.

If he signs the qualifying offer thorn odds are he is gone. He will not get cheaper in the crazy cap bump summer next year. Some team will get stupid, some team full of young, cost controlled players with cap room looking for a playoff-experienced guy to step in and bring that experience. Of his scrappy role fits the title contending Cavs, some other team with the same aspirations and cap room will bogart that.

Like it or not they got to get this deal done this off-season.

Assuming that those contract structures are both legal and doable , why would they be such a sticking point for Tristan? Either way he's getting obscene money. It's hard for me to imagine that this is what is holding up the contract being signed.

They are both "doable and legal." It's about the fact that Rich Paul doesn't make concessions and one of the hardest negotiators in the NBA as an agent. Bobby Marks noted the same on Twitter.

Yeah, that was all I was getting at. Tristan was probably initially pissed at him for the arm bar like we all were, but then there's the whole driving his price up issue. Better not let Lebron catch him chest-bumping that lady :chuckle:

I expect the deal to be in that area. I wouldn't call anything a "Sticking Point." Both sides are locked in a negotiation that is ongoing. Also, just because they haven't reached a deal, that doesn't mean that both sides aren't on good terms. These things take time.

So do you think that both sides are willing to go 5 years , 80 million and the only sticking point is the specific amounts for each year?

I still don't get why people say TT drove up his price tag with his playoff performance. Based on his per 36 numbers, he played exactly the same as he did in the regular season, if not slightly worse. He was going to get paid regardless. Rich Paul is just trying to trumpet his playoff performance like he became Dennis Rodman when it was nothing of the sort.

If he sounds the QO, we could potentially S&T him next off-season to a team of his liking. One of the few teams I could actually see being interested in him is Orlando. I just can't see too many teams willing to pay him what he's currently asking, especially when you consider Paul will ask for even more money next year. Hopefully we just win the title this year. Then I could care less about him walking.
