Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
But it only works if Portland actually values Thompson, and we have no reason to believe that they do, and some reason to believe that they don't.

I mean, this has about zero chance of happening.

Portland has to value Thompson and Thompson has to want to go to Portland. The second item is definitely going to be a problem, for the trade and for Rich Paul.

The players dont nor should they care about the tax situation which is an arrangement by the owners and the total tax is a accumulation of salaries.syre the difference between 14 million to 16 million is about an extra 9 million dollars but the cavs were aware of this situation when they signed mo for 2 million and JR smith for 5 million.

It also didnt stop the Cavs from extending AV for 10 million in a year they expected a 65 million cap or giving shump 9 million for 5 years

Cavs knew they were spending around 60 million on three players.
It doesn't work like that.
Answer this: right now cavs can save around 50 million this year by not signing TT or by giving him the league minimum. True or False?

They have locked in everyone else. Though they say, they don't like this hold out situation, They will be elated if they have to find a replacement for TT.
TT just shot himself on his foot.

People give you a lot of crap on here, but you are dead on with this. The tax isn't something that came from the government or the UN or the players association. The owners did it to themselves. Dan Gilbert was repeatedly indicated as one of the ringleaders.

He seems kind of dumb to artificially place these restrictions on his business and then bite his nails when it comes to paying the penalties. How can he not be wishing they had the spend a dollar pay a dollar they used to have?

"uh, Dan, you did this to prevent superteams."

"I would like a super team, but II don't want to pay for it."

Kevin and Kyrie are on cheap deals. Jr Moz and shump are on cheap deals. Mo is on a cheap deal, and they are still in trouble because this is the most talented Cavs team ever.

"I would like a super team, but II don't want to pay for it."

Even though, you know, Gilbert IS paying for it. We're already nearing/setting records for highest payroll and taxes. God forbid the Cavs want to only overpay Tristan by a certain amount, rather than an even more absurd amount. :chuckle:

TT might sit out the entire year on principle. LOL

If he does this the Cavs STILL have RFA rights on him. So basically he is out of the league for a year, and we are right back to where we started. Only other teams will have rightfully cooled off on him, he will make less, and then the Cavs likely just match whatever offer he accepts.

So the Cavs get him at a discount and he loses a year of earning power.

Tell me how again this helps TT.

It does not. RP/TT's bluff of "if the Cavs "force" him to take the QO he will leave 2016" is revealed by TT not signing the QO.

I have no doubt by now TT wants to be a Cavs longterm and by now its just a matter of numbers.

Sitting out the year would be the worst thing he could do.

-Its not like he has a huge following/backing..most people around the NBA are calling even the 5/80 a big overpay. He will not be viewed as a "hero" here
-The only leverage RP/TT have left is the "The Cavs need TT to win a ring" argument. now lets assume the Cavs win a ring while TT sits out.
-The Cavs propably use the Trade Exeption on a replacement for TT or give TT's minutes to Kaun who looks like a real rotation player. Meaning: there is a real risk of the Cavs replacing TT with someone 80% as good as TT but only 50% as expensive.
-Sitting out will a)severly hurt his image as a competitive player and b)decrease his interest because he misses a chance to impress potential bidders with great play. leading to:
-..he will still be a RFA so if the Cavs want to keep him they will match any contract.

especially after Lebron weighed in this will be done in the next few days.

Its clear the Cavs want TT back and TT wants to be a Cav..it was a huge pissing match fueled by RP... Lebron said basically "stop this nonesense and get something done"

They will agree on a deal fast.

Hot Rod Williams got the CAVS to match a ridiculous offer sheet given out by the cHeat. We were in cap hell after that but no one ever called him on it
Vintage reasons to hate the cHeat.

I have stood firm saying I don't believe TT deserves the max, but if you don't think the Cavs are licking their chops thinking about how cheap 5 at 80 will be in year 5, you are fooling yourself. There is a reason they really want the 5 years.

No one thinks its ironic that Dan Gilbert Dropped the shit he is now stepping in with his demands last CBA?

Personally, I don't think it is weird to have to pay more for a team that is this stacked in talent.

It's not ironic at all that Dan setup the tax situation and now has to deal with it.

The tax situation still benefits him because it's his leverage to keep salaries reasonable--even while it hurts him in small ways. Without a doubt it would cost him MUCH more to pay players without a cap and tax scenario. Can you imagine how much LBJ is worth in a non cap and tax NBA?

Nope, he's probably not that upset about it. Because that is exactly what got LeBron here, or at least played a major role... Forced the Heat to cut salary and cut corners.

And on top of that, even in the worst case scenario, if Tristan just held out and the Cavs somehow lost him for nothing, they still have a championship caliber team slotted right behind him, with the rest of the core pieces not going anywhere.

So yeah Dan's probably not thrilled that he's facing this tax burden. But I'm sure he'd sign up for it again in a heartbeat if it meant having Lebron James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving on his team.

I don't really believe that narrative, but I get it. I think Lebron was coming back almost guaranteed. When they hit on the Wiggins pick it just sealed the deal.
