Worrisome Wednesday

Los Angeles -- When I got off my flight this afternoon, I was rather taken aback my how much e-mail I got from fans upset by the way the Cavs played and lost to the Knicks last night. Obviously, you guys and gals are upset with what you saw.

If you read my game story, I break down that what happened has been building since Hughes' injury. Terry Pluto also had a good perspective.

In general, here's what is happening:
--With Hughes out and Donyell Marshall and Damon Jones struggling, teams are camping in the paint. They bring help when LeBron James drives and the have been double-teaming Zydrunas Ilgauskas, although I think they've been under-using Z.

--James has tried to make up for this by attempting more jump shots, like he did last night. When the Cavs got the lead in the third quarter, it was when LeBron made five straight jumpers. In fact, at one point LeBron actually made 9-of-10 shots last night, which got the Cavs up 11. He's taken seven or more 3-pointers in each of the last four games. He'd only tried seven or more four times in the first 28 games.

--Damon Jones is playing too many minutes, which is why his defensive lapses have gone up and become a real glaring issue. As for his shooting slump, that happens to everyone. As for the fans' reaction to it, he brought it on himself.

--This is very much like the Cavs played at the end of last season, with the exception that they are playing better defense. By contesting more shots and working hard on help defense, they've actually kept themselves in more games. Perhaps it will serve them well.

It is not surprising to me there are offensive problems. All year, Mike Brown has sort of just assumed the offense would always show up. He repeatedly said it would "take care of itself." Well, without Hughes and with some bad habits, it ain't right now.

So this is a real test for Brown, to see what adjustments he makes or fails to make. And if the players will respond to these issues or continue to say in their bad habits.

By the way, Anderson Varejao will probably play against the Lakers. Also, Damon is starting for the Cavs in that one, Kobe Bryant is starting there for the Lakers. Who do you give the edge to? :chuckles:

more on the defense we've been playing lately - here are our stats for the past 12 games.

We're giving up 90.9 ppg - do that for a season and you rank 5th in the league
We're allowing .432 FG% - do that for a season and you rank 7th in the league
We're allowing .308 FG% from 3 - do that for a season and you rank 2nd in the league. remember when we were the absolute worst team in the league at defending the 3?

With our offense not flowing we have depended on an improved defensive performance to stay afloat. This has happened in general, although the Knicks game we were abused at the perimeter so stats mean little there.

Varejao returning gives us an energy boost, as he can provide the little hustle areas that at times are missing in our teams play.

Windhorst couldn't have said it better.

The Cavs could give up 70 points a game but if they're only scoring 68 than it won't matter.
Mike Brown has to do something to improve the offense. You do have to score some points in order to win. That hasn't been a problem until recently. With Hughes now out and the rest of the league making adjustments things haven't gone as smoothly lately. I still don't see any quality offensive system that has been put in place. The Cavs have mainly been relying purely on talent and individual ability at the offensive end.
The defense is improved but there are 2 ends of the court and Brown needs to wake up to that fact with a better system and plays offensively.

In today's ABJ he defends not playing Luke Jackson because he's basically a rookie and unproven and needs to produce in whatever minutes he gives him. Well coach, you're a rookie too and unproven. You also need to produce. The Cavs record is good but I haven't seen where things are running that perfectly. The Cavs also had a pretty good record under Silas before the late season collapse. Randy Wittman also started out 15-7 before Z got hurt with a far less talented team than the current Cavs.

As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out on Mike Brown and whether he was the right choice and the long term solution as head coach. There have been positives and some areas have improved. Brown also appears to have some Silas like qualities with stubborness, weak offensive coaching, riding LeBron too hard, playing mediocre vets and not developing or giving opportunities to young players.

Varejao might provide some energy but it could take some time for him to get back too 100%

I hope Kobe doesn't go for 60 tomorrow.

Sure, Mike Brown has to show he can put the whole package together, but it is encouraging to see the team make so much progress on the end of the court he's been focusing on. Defense takes longer to get right than offense and we had more work to do there, so it made sense to start with defense and get it right. Like I said above, the stats show it's getting close to time to start working on a real offense.

Rome wasn't built in a day...

Kobe s going to destroy us tomm night....if Damon starts then that means Eric will be gaurding him...I love eric's D but he cant hold Kobe....Newble should start because of defensive purposes ( and if you remember last year when we played LA Kobe came down on Newbles foot and was injured for a month or 2)

kobe destroys everyone besides artest, so the game plan will be to pay attention to everyone else.

i dont understand how Z is not getting the ball more. he had 8 points on 9 shots, that is terrible. he is the second most important player on this team and without hughes he gets 9 shots against the knicks of all teams. :thumbdown

I think Kobe may drop 50+ on us, but we have to shut down the rest of the Lakers.

Mike Brown is getting his players to buy into his defense, but now it may be time to have some offensive sets, and stick to them, and have a regular playing rotation. LeBron may only be 21 years old, but he needs his breaks too.

No way bro' ...LeBron will be on him..Kobe will be shutdown for only 65..It's not like he's Richard Jefferson or anything..

What a great post

Kobe played 44 hard minutes in last nights loss to Portland. He was clearly tired at the end, missing free throws and clanging three's. The key for portland was they contained the lakers big men (Mihm in particular) and went inside fequently.

We can beat Kobe and co, but not by chucking three balls.
