Curious what people think about Dewayne Dedmon. He's a (very) poor man's Porzingis type. There are not too many bigs in the NBA on lower level contracts that are attainable that can both protect the rim some and shoot the 3 some.
The problem is thought that the Cavs don't have too many options in acquiring Dedmon. They could try taking off the rest of the pick protection on the 2019 1st we owe them (if it falls 11-30), and then take Dedmon in on the Kyrie Irving trade exception... in that scenario I would imagine we would also try to cut back some of the incoming salary by including Calderon and/or Zizic in that deal.
However, that type of deal is pretty much irrelevant, as regardless of who we sent out of the minimum level players, the end result would be increasing our salary just enough to get into the next tier of the repeater tax, and essentially costing the Cavs $30+ million. I like Dedmon, but not for even half of that amount.
The lone other realistic option possible would be trading Frye away for Dedmon, which would actually give the Cavs some tax savings.
Also worth noting that Dedmon has a player option next season for $6.3m which I fully expect him to decline. We also would not inherit his bird rights.
He's shooting 42.1% from three this season, though all have been corner 3 attempts. I think he's an ideal fit with Love, and gives the Cavs some flexibility. They'd lose some shooting, and pick and pop ability, but maybe they could also convince Atlanta to swap Babbitt and Calderon as part of the deal as well.
I personally wouldn't want to lose Channing, but the Cavs are just so limited in what they can offer, as they have very few middle of the road salaries that they'd be willing to move.
I'm interested in hearing if anyone would like that swap of Dedmon/Babbitt for Frye/Calderon/Rest of '19 first.
