Was Trent Dilfer in three superbowls?

Seriously, you're defending one of the worst arguments I've ever seen on here. Polian would still have his ring if he drafted me to play on the D-line. Peyton was that good. Polian was great once, but he really didn't do a great job in Indy.

Are you really trying to defend this argument?

His drafts were often horrendous...absolutely horrendous.

Notice you had to go back to 1989 for those? He joined the Colts in 97, his tenure there is what we're talking about. No denying he was great at his job. However he wasn't nearly as good with the Colts as he was in the past.

When you have to go back to the late 80s in a different era of the NFL....I think that says a lot.

Hmm. not sure, but I hope its someone who posts on RCF.. You guys are brilliant!

I'm a two time fantasy football champion.

Which oddly carries about as much weight as being a relevant GM 25 years ago.

Might want to go look up when Peyton Manning was drafted.

Great job of taking the obvious best player. Surprising there isn't a statue of Jim Paxson up at the Q for similar reasons...

So you're telling me that Polian managed to hit on his 1st round picks?! Clearly greatness that should be aspired towards. The only negative here that people have brought up about Heckert is his poor use of mid/late round picks. Something that he seems to have clearly rectified this year.

Also notice that Polian hasn't drafted a single pro-bowl player since 06. 6 years without finding a pro-bowler. That's pretty bad. Pretty much proves the point that he was great once but hasn't been nearly as good recently.

To be fair it was 5 years and he drafted 2 pro bowlers in 2006 and they won a ring. Nobody is perfect, but have the Browns had a GM draft as good as Polian in the past 30 years?

This may be true, but he stated he'd come back for the right team when Rizzo talked to him. Maybe he's itching to help upstart another franchise.

I don't see Polian working again in the NFL. At 70 years old he's not going to have a long run as a GM in any job he takes. An owner isn't going to want to hire a GM knowing in 2-3 years they will have to do it again. His last few years in Indy were not good. The team was good on the field but he failed to bring in good young talent to continue the winning. That is why when Manning got hurt, the team folded like a deck of cards. He was a great GM with Buffalo, Carolina and the 1st half of his tenure with the Colts. However; his most recent performance has been very poor. That is much more relevant than the guys he drafted in 1987.

Polian might have been more of a candidate prior to Banner. I can't imagine him taking a lesser job than what he had with the Colts at his age. I'm not interested even if he is though. I'd really just prefer to stick with Heckert. I just don't think you're going to do any better than him. He's got 3 years experience basically on his own, so the restructured organization should benefit him. Any first time GM is a massive risk that could pause any progress we've made, and the retreads are usually out of a job for a reason.
