Who really treated the fans and the team with the most respect in every other situation throughout his dozen years with the organization?
Who volunteered to take the Caravan tour every winter to meet fans from all around Ohio? Who always openly proclaimed his love for the city and fans through the public lens?
But oh well, he made a decision to leave that he himself admits was a mistake.
Dead to me.
I mean in respect to how he handled his free agency, which I thought was clear in the context of what I was talking about. If I didn't, that's my fault. I don't think Thome, Ramirez, or Belle are bad guys.
With that said, in regard to how they handled free agency:
Belle made it clear he just wanted money, and he did just that.
Ramirez made it clear he just wanted money, and he did just that.
Thome said he wanted to stay, that they'd have to tear the jersey off his back, that he didn't want to be traded to a contender that July. In the end, he just wanted the money.
Taking all of that, I think Thome showed the fans and the team the least amount of respect in that situation. That doesn't mean he's a bad guy, or that he didn't do other great things, or that he was a bad player. I'm just not going to pretend he didn't lie and handle his free agency much differently than how he said he would. I'm also not going to pretend that, because he's a really nice guy, he wouldn't have used roids. If you want to give him a pass on all of that I can respect that, but I just can't and won't.
