Pine time puzzling for Marshall
In defeat, vet sat seething in nearly all of second half

Plain Dealer Reporter

The good ship Cavaliers is experiencing some turbulent waters.

No one was more upset in the aftermath of Saturday night's 100-95 giveaway loss to the Philadelphia 76ers than forward Donyell Marshall.

Marshall, who is arguably the Cavaliers' most productive reserve - averaging 10 points and 6.8 rebounds in 27 minutes a game - was benched for all but 54 seconds of the second half against the Sixers.

Marshall is one of the most affable and analytical players on the team, but was in no mood for chit-chat or analysis afterward. He was clearly miffed. "You've got to ask the coach [Mike Brown] about that," said Marshall, when asked to comment on playing less than one minute of the second half.

"I don't want to talk about it."

Marshall played a season-low 11:28, scoring two points and getting four rebounds. They were the fewest minutes he's played since late last season, when a back injury limited him to four minutes for the Toronto Raptors in a game against Atlanta.

Benching Marshall for virtually all of the second half was a puzzling move by Brown. His explanation: "I went with Andy [Anderson Varejao] , Drew [Gooden] and Z [Zydrunas Ilgauskas] to bring energy to the game," he said.

Gooden and Ilgauskas put up some respectable second-half numbers, combining for 14 points and 13 rebounds in 34 minutes, but shot 5-of-17 from the field. Varejao's second-half numbers: no points on 0-of-3 shooting from the field and four rebounds in 13 minutes.

With 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the Cavaliers trailing, 94-89, Gooden fouled out. Instead of turning to 3-point threat Marshall in the final seconds, Brown went with Varejao. In 67 NBA games, Varejao is 0-of-2 from 3-point range.

The Cavaliers (27-19), who face the Milwaukee Bucs (24-22) tonight at The Q, hold down the fourth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It's the final homecourt spot and games like tonight's against a team in the playoff mix affect the jockeying.

Marshall's *****ing to the press about not playing in the second half seems out of character to me. In any event, it's not a good thing. Let's hope he apologizes and starts hitting some threes.

I don't know if DM is really "*****ing". I hate the press. What else could he say to that "question". Did he seem "upset" because he didn't play or was it because the reporters asked such a dumbass question. I always love when they ask somebody "how does it feel to lose?" or "your son is dead, how does that feel?"

Seems like him and Jones are a couple of whiny little chuckers. At first their signings seemed good but now I wish we went other avenues..

what other avenues?

I suspect it's the press trying to start a controversy. Lets see how things go tonight before reading too much into that.

The guys mad that he didn't get any playing time in a loss where he feels that he could have helped. Hes basically right, maybe he would have actually made a couple 3's, can't blame him

Like keeping Jiri? :chuckles:

Fear the Brewers Mister. U don't want to see us in interleague play.

We're better off paying Jiri to play for the bucks than to pay him to play in cleveland.

I'm glad they benched him....maybe it will light a fire under his ass. I think he's gotten lazier as the season has progressed. His rebounds are steadily declining. He thinks his job is just to stand outside the 3 line and wait for passes....he has to do more. Especially when he is only shooting 30%. He has to put in more effort and earn his minutes. Hopefully this will motivate him and get him re-focused.

It didnt seem like Marshall was making a big fuss to me. He said just about the same thing anybody else would have said in that same situation.

My thoughts too, Maximus. He's been slowing down for quite awhile now. Maybe this will rekindle some of the hustle we saw earlier in the season. We really need him. When he's scoring, he's a potent force off the bench. The last thing we need right now is for players to be griping about their minutes on the court, particularly when they're well paid and not playing up to capacity.

I am also hoping that this is the lighting force to him actually doing something with the minutes he gets for example hit wide open shots or if you can take a dribble inside the 3 line and shoot a 15 footer gte your shot going then move back out to 3....his play has dropped off considerably and if he hit hal of his WIDE OPEN shots from 3 we would ave 4 or 5 less losses

Bullshnit I want Dilwaukee 2-1 and after tonight 3-1 they are what the doctor ordered.

we don't want no team chocked full of players who are contented to sit on the bench without getting into the game. if marshall got angry about not getting more playing time saturday night, then that is a very good things for us. that means that he is not going to take it laying down anymore.

cock-a-doodle-doo

Everyone should really stop talking about this whole subject. Donyell Marshall answered a question as plain as can be. "You have to ask coach about it." "I don't want to talk about it."

No complaints in that. Silence to the question would have been worse. But if a media guy is in front of you asking a question, you usually answer it.

Did he say, "I'm miffed that I didn't play in the 4th." ? No, this Burt Graeff fellow did. Was he seething? Not that I could tell, but Burt Graeff sure thinks so. He obviously massages Donyell Marshall's loins and buffs his toenails, if you pick up on his lackadaisal attempt to talk down Varejao... He also fails to note that Marshall hasn't been playing his best basketball as of late... he started out strong but has evened out... he's half the reason why our 3pt % is down from the 40's to low 30's.

Ok, thank you lyxo!

lol..

But yeah, like he said. Yella never really made a big deal out of it. More like the reporters searching for a story in a slow time of news.
