WKBN IN YOUNGSTOWN TO AIR STEELERS VS. RAVENS OVER BROWNS VS. BENGALS

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Who's flaming? The station is going to show the game that's going to earn them higher ratings, especially when they're right in the middle of two NFL markets. Higher ratings win out everyime.

I wish that were true for Erie land. We are in Buffalo's market and if they are away, we get that game no matter what. It really sucks for people without the ticket. The thing that really sucks, is that if you live on the west side of town, you are actually closer to Cleveland, than you are to Buffalo. The area has bitched and complained about this for years with no resolution and no sign of it ever changing for us...

You mean they're displaying a game between two Super Bowl-contending heated rivals that will draw some serious ratings over a game between two teams that will finish below .500, with the Bengals probably ending up with a top-5 pick? No way!!!

I had to...this isn't surprising whatsoever. From a sports marketing standpoint, this is a better move. You're just pissed because it's an Ohio city that is close to Cleveland and won't be able to watch. You can't legitimately argue that that isn't true.

Bumpage-

With the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers both scheduled to play Sunday at 1 p.m., fans of the Black and Gold will again win out when it comes to watching their team on a local station.

The Browns will be playing at home against the Tennessee Titans, and Pittsburgh will be away playing the Houston Texans. Both games are being covered by the CBS network. The Steelers game will be shown locally due to a contractual agreement with the NFL. The same scenario occurred in early September.

And the same will be true the following weekend, on Oct. 9. Cleveland has a bye week, so WKBN will again show the Steelers game.

Here is an explanation of why WKBN-27 must carry the Steelers and not the Browns:

There are primary TV markets (cities like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Detroit, etc.), and there are secondary TV markets ( cities like Youngstown, Erie, Toledo, etc.) that are located within a certain mile range of the teams. Then there are all other TV markets not close to an NFL team.

Both the Browns and the Steelers "claim" Youngstown as a secondary TV market. When there is a conflict like this Sunday, the NFL rules state that if one team is away and the other team is at home, the home team (in this case, Cleveland) "protects" their attendance and the away team (in this case, Pittsburgh) "serves" the fans who can't attend.

So, due to contractual obligations and NFL rules, WKBN 27 must air the team that is away, which in this case is the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This is not a decision made by local management at WKBN-TV. Viewers can call the NFL complaint line at: 212-450-2000 to give any input on this decision.

Does anyone find it funny that the Browns have been airing for the last couple of weeks in the affiliate stations of the Austin CBS station, and the one in Little Rock? ;).

This week the odd-city is Seattle.

You'll see that popular college players will in some cases attract odd TV markets once they reach the pros.
