With the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers both scheduled to play Sunday at 1 p.m., fans of the Black and Gold will again win out when it comes to watching their team on a local station.
The Browns will be playing at home against the Tennessee Titans, and Pittsburgh will be away playing the Houston Texans. Both games are being covered by the CBS network. The Steelers game will be shown locally due to a contractual agreement with the NFL. The same scenario occurred in early September.
And the same will be true the following weekend, on Oct. 9. Cleveland has a bye week, so WKBN will again show the Steelers game.
Here is an explanation of why WKBN-27 must carry the Steelers and not the Browns:
There are primary TV markets (cities like Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Detroit, etc.), and there are secondary TV markets ( cities like Youngstown, Erie, Toledo, etc.) that are located within a certain mile range of the teams. Then there are all other TV markets not close to an NFL team.
Both the Browns and the Steelers "claim" Youngstown as a secondary TV market. When there is a conflict like this Sunday, the NFL rules state that if one team is away and the other team is at home, the home team (in this case, Cleveland) "protects" their attendance and the away team (in this case, Pittsburgh) "serves" the fans who can't attend.
So, due to contractual obligations and NFL rules, WKBN 27 must air the team that is away, which in this case is the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This is not a decision made by local management at WKBN-TV. Viewers can call the NFL complaint line at: 212-450-2000 to give any input on this decision.
