Woj Analyzes the New NBA Landscape

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm not denying they don't have potential, but the reality of the situation is they currently are quite bad, and need to acquire at least one other superstar, which is very difficult for any team.

Will Irving and future draft picks turn them into a contender? Maybe, maybe not. But they have a really long way to go still. Success for the Cavs is far from certain, is my broader point.

Yes they are bad. But do you realize what happened 2 years ago? Look how far we have come. We turned a bunch of spare parts with horrible contracts into the best young player in the league, 3 other young promising players and the biggest stash of first round picks in the league.

You say we need another superstar. Guess how you get that superstar? You draft him. Guess where they usually go? The top of the draft.

I'm still amazed at all the people that rip this team for the won loss record. It's so short sighted. There is no fun in being a team like Memphis that get to the playoffs then loses then has to disassemble.

We are doing things right. Even if it takes some time.

OJ mayo and Rudy gay is dissassembling? I look towards Memphis being a better team. Gay is a poor mans carmelo. They replaced Speights with Ed Davis and upgraded defensively with tayshaun prince. Ellington was inconsistent for them in a spot they still are pretty deep at as far as rotations.

Tony Allen, Marc Gasol, Randolph, Conley along with Sam Young were the starters for that team two years ago. it seems they have upgraded.

Woj just had too many drinks and throwing a temper tantrum. Memphis wasnt going anywhere with Gay this year. The grizzlies knew it and cashed in on him. They bolstered their club financially while keeping 4 of their 5 starters . even leaving room to resign tony next year which didnt look to be an option before this trade.

But can you honestly look at their team, and say, Hey I could see those guys competing for a championship? I don't know, maybe I am vastly underrating their team, but I can't.

I can say that they are in a much better position to wear out that non-lottery protection now. Tgey were on the path to suck in 2015-2016. Now they put themselves in a position to roll over to a "new era" and make the playoffs those years.

Their front line is probably the most versatile in the league, and they have some really good defenders. They are never out of it because they play good D-a lot like contending Cavs teams, except they have a little more scoring punch. If you are asking, do they have that one transcendent talent that will come up big for them in crunch time? That I can't answer, but I don't think Gay was that either.

How is it being short-sighted to say they potential but have a long way to go? I'm not ripping them at all - just saying the truth is they are currently very bad and need to hit on their draft picks and other acquisition if they ever want to me a contender, which is nothing closing to certain.
