Johnny Manziel: Swan Won't Return His Calls

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Manziel did have a nice play where he saw the blitz coming from the MIKE and got the ball to the hot read like it was no big deal. Last year he would have tucked and ran away from that guy. He made the correct play from the pocket. Encouraging.

I think Manziels decision making was pretty spot on. Also that touchdown run where the defense was spread out was a product of the play calling. with the halfback curls and swing passes Flip was calling for both Mccown and Manziel.

It will be interesting to see the buffalo game since those teams will be more familiar with each other after practicing together.

I'll go with top 3 2nd year qb in the league. fortunately Johnny has a higher caliber quarterback in front of him than last season.

It doesnt look like to me like Mccown will play his way off the field barring injury.

Mccown is looking more like bears Mccown than the tampa one.

What I like about Flip is he is giving Manziel a chance to develop as an NFL quarterback instead of forcing Manziel to be Johnny Pistol.

Hopefully before the preseason is done Johnny gets some game time under center but i think the goal is to get him comfortable under shotgun first.

Per the Browns beat:

- Manziel underwent an MRI that showed no structural damage

- The Browns are considering adding another QB.

Having to impress people with what can only be described as a mediocre arm can't be easy on the ligaments.

Apparently, this elbow thing has been an issue since High School. He's been trying to impress with a noodle for a long long time.

Super fun quarterback facts:

In the system DeFilippo is bringing over from Oakland, Carr averaged a paltry 5.5 YPA last season. On passes targeted at least 20 yards downfield, he went 15-for-71, good for an NFL-worst 23.9% in which Pro Football Focus accounts for dropped passes. Our OC got credit for developing a rookie quarterback, but he did it through a dink and dunk offense.

Hoyer was officially named starting QB in Houston yesterday.

You realize that even if Hoyer was still here we'd still be dinking and dunking, right?

My hope was to give perspective on the playcalling we have seen so far with both McCown and Manziel. Carr was running the same offense last year, and it produced some promising improvement as the year progressed, but was bottom of the league in an important advanced statistic.

If you want to talk Hoyer, we could. My understanding was that people are sick of that discussion at the moment. I did think it was worth an update that our much discussed starting QB from last year will be starting again this year for another franchise.

Oh ok. That was a useful perspective on what our offense will most likely look like under Flip, although I didn't think he called plays last year?

I am actually very interested to see how Hoyer does this year. He's definitely proven that he can beat out young competition, but I want to see him be good for a whole year now.

I don't think it's any surprise that with a rookie QB they wouldn't be taking chances down the field regularly. Also, who exactly was Oakland supposed to throw the ball downfield to last year?

You play to the talent you have. The Browns tried to do that with Hoyer last year, dinking and dunking before relying on the run-action to take shots downfield. Hoyer excelled at the play-action game, but once they shut down the running game it made him pretty much irrelevant.

You've just got to exploit the matchups you can, not pigeonhole guys into doing what they're not capable of doing.

Dollars to donuts you'll see McCown take less shots downfield without Marshall/Jeffry or Evans/VJax out wide this season.
