Your 2019 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Indians now have the lowest runs against in the mlb. Have played a couple less games than the dodgers though

Thanks for the actual legit info! lol Somehow looking back, we managed going into the season, we lost most of our starting rotation and we had to throw together a bullpen yet we still became one of the best in the league!

Hey, look who I'm sourcing!! Just thought it was funny, but the athletic does suck. @David. giving us those earned runs stat is something I expect to read in an article leading up to the biggest series yet this season.

Sadly most of the people who cover Cleveland sports aren't worth much. Hence why I love this site since we actually cover the sports better than any news place does lol

If the season ended today, would you pick up Kipnis' option?

The Indians traded a stud pitcher in his prime in part because they didn't want to be on the hook for a $17 to $20 million deal in 2020. They're not going to exercise a $16.5 million option for a guy entering his 33 year old season just because he's had a couple good months.

Kluber went 3 innings today, 40 pitches. Gave up a couple solo shots, but it’s good to see him and CC out there giving it a shot. All good news

If we decline Kipnis's option, how much do you think Kipnis will sign for if we don't trust one of those guys to take the spot?

This is actually an interesting exercise.

First off, there's no "if" the Indians decline Kipnis' option. Loyalty and personal feelings aside, he’s a 1-win player (FG) and due $16.5M next year.

Obviously, agents use comps around the league for contract negotiations and salary expectations. Last year's market was FLUSH with direct Kipnis comps.... i.e. 2nd basemen with a successful track record but have had a few down years in a row. Scary similar.

Brian Dozier got 1/$9M, Daniel Murphy got 2/$24M, DJ LeMahieu got 2/$24M, Jonathan Schoop got 1/$7.5M

The analytic guys believe it costs ~$8M per 1 WAR.

Provided Kip is fully healthy and there's no residual effects to his past injury issues, his people will for sure start negotiations at $12M a year. I think $8M-$12M per year is his range on the open market.

I really don't think the Indians FO would give those numbers much consideration, to be honest.

Yeah, I think the absolute most I'd offer Kipnis is $4-$5 million, and even that, eh.

Kipnis is still only a 0.5 WAR player right now. Going by what @EdMonix11 said, that would put Kipnis at around $4 million a year, and he'll be 33 at the start of next season.

If he wants to give us a supreme home-discount, then I'd give him a look. If he's going to command something like $8 million a year, then nah.

Granted, markets aren’t necessarily replicated YoY, but I’d have a tough time seeing Kipnis getting what Dozier or Schoop got in free agency.

Which, could make him a return candidate.

He’s a fan favorite, second on the team in jersey sales behind Lindor.
