Your 2019 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dozier had a 0.0 WAR in 2018, and got $9 million.

If Kip finishes the year well, and finishes with a WAR in the 0.8-1 range, I bet some team gives him a 1-yr, $7.5-$8 million "prove it" deal.

@EdMonix11 @Derek @AZ_ And whoever else wants to contribute.

Do we wanna maybe give an incentive based contract to Kipnis if we decide to resign him. Like a base of 4-5 mil with incentives that can reach 3-4 milish?

Kipnis is one of the leaders on this team so returning him in a sense wouldn’t be out of the question, but it would have to be at the small market price not the free agent market price.

I personally believe it will be Arroyo, Chang, with an off chance of Mathias and Clement for the INF next season bringing in a veteran as well to compete with them for the spot.

We won’t know what they think of the likes of Tom and Mathias til the off season mostly because they are Rule 5 eligible so if we fee either of them is pro ready they will be protected. I know neither are rated prospects but that hasn’t stopped them of late making a difference in this underrated minor league system.

I know we have youth in the wings to replace Kipnis's production.

I just feel like he's more important to this team than some realize. It's also an awkward conversation to have to pay him 2.5 million just to cut him, and now discuss bringing him back.

If we keep him, I'm fine. If he goes elsewhere, it's probably the smarter decision.

At the end of the day, both keeping and moving on from Kipnis make sense. I have no qualms with either idea with bringing him back at a reduce/incentives based price, but I lean towards the going with the young guys next season.

So His WAR is in the bottom half of baseball for his position and someone is going to pay him more?
Maybe so. 1 year 3-4M? I’m curious as to what you guys think he’s worth.

Schoop had a 2018 that wasn't much better than what Kipnis is doing this year, and he got $7.5 million.

Ok. The numbers justify it.

While they had forgettable 2018s, Schoop and Dozier were also a year off of being very productive offensive players. 3.8 and 5.0 fWAR in 2017. I'm sure the Nats and Twins were hoping they would have bounce backs seasons

I wouldn't really expect Kipnis to be getting anything more than $5m. I imagine both parties will look to move on after this season.

If he finishes the season strong a 1 year 1-2 M deal is possible. For me to say that is a minor miracle, as I’ve wanted him as far away from CLE as we could possibly send him.
But a one year deal for min money is fine with how he's played this year. If he wants to leave, bye.

Actually his numbers over the last half of last season were solid as well as I recall

Would I pick up option ... Nope

Would I keep him ... Yep

Kip is already at 1.3 WAR this year and was worth 2.1 WAR last year.

I would imagine he gets a multi-year deal (2 or 3 years) worth over $10M/year.

It'll probably be somewhere else.

I agree with this. No way I pay him the option amount, but if we can agree to a fair deal I would bring him back.

Baseball-reference and ESPN only has him at a 0.6 WAR. Where are you seeing 1.3 at?

You say that we have youth in the wings to replace Kipnis production

The issue of course is we do not know if they can replace his current production?

Critics of players and trade lovers fail to see that these moves do not happen in a vacuum .. Arroyo and Chang or a vet in/up mean that two go

Kip and Freeman have been huge helps ... if we step away from bias we have to own that or have you and others forgotten we have best record in baseball since early June

By the way I will own that I am warming to Puig ... but still no dings from he and Reyes

EDIT (can't actually edit my posts right now for some reason): found it on Fangraphs, what's the difference in how FG calculates their WAR compared to everyone else?

The option amount is only 2 million more than what he made this year. What are you guys hypothetically doing with that money instead?

Not sure yet, but I'm not paying 33 year old Kipnis $16.5 million next season.

I'm sure we can find a better use for that kind of money than paying an aging and middle of the road second basemen that kind of cash.
