2019 Cleveland Browns Regular Season

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My take from the game, and maybe this has already all been said...Kitchens and Monken need to get Baker the play calls faster. It was damn near 1sec on the play clock every time he snapped. I don’t think he was getting a chance to process and read the defense pre-snap. That being said, Baker needs to stop patting the ball and make his reads and throw it, easier said than done but that’s something that will move him into the higher tier of QBs. This happened early on for him last year as well. A couple extra pats of the ball and the defense has time to close the game or knock down the pass.

Also, we need to get more creative. The only calls were shit, Chubbs utilization is shit, and I have some concerns with Ward at CB. He’s not impressed me so far this season.

It sucks that my expectations don’t allow me to be happy about a 20pt Browns victory.

It was nice to finally see a kicker actually make kicks :chuckle: . But the special teams overall was pretty good. Scottish hammer looks awesome
Special teams are great.

Jarvis not letting the ball bounce on punts unless it’s a short punt coupled with few penalties (think there was one hold total) does wonders for field position.

Add on 5 for 5 on fgs/pats and Gillan dropping punts inside the 20, and it was a really good night.

It's incredibly stupid players have to do this

I would disagree. Very few players "need" these dark visors and they are banned so trainers can easily look into a player's eyes, through their helmet, to look for concussion symptoms. The validity of that can be debated I suppose, but there is an actual good reason for why they're banned.

Standing behind the guy you championed for and not writing him off after 2 weeks. Not playing Captain Hindsight because we didn't hire McCarthy- it didn't seem like you had an opinion on him when the coaching search was going on, so it's strange to me that you're a fan now. :conf (8):

I’m sorry but what I’m seeing tells a different story than what I believed at that point in time.

He seems ill prepared to make a jump from RB coach to HC in half a season. He has too much going on, and in interviews he seems like he doesn’t know what the other teams aren’t doing. I distinctly remember a quote from him after the Titans game saying “they had a good game plan, whatever that gameplan was I don’t know”..

There’s a lot of cause for concern right now

Gotta say though, it sure is easier to get back in the lab after a win. Patience is key this season . . .

Gillan's leg strength was never in doubt, but the questions were about his ability to pin teams inside the 20, and his holding. He's been great on both counts. Maybe it looked like a risky decision from the outside, but they clearly knew what they were doing. And Seibert has looked really good.

They immediately take a players helmet when they enter the concussion protocol, so this point is moot as to why it shouldn't be allowed IMO. And they don't enter the protocol based on a trainer looking at someone's eyes.....it is a call from the booth.

At this point, it is simply the NFL exhibiting control over the players and legislating what it is they can and can't do. It's obvious to me that the league doesn't like the look of it on the field. It's a completely subjective move, given how the implemented concussion protocol works now.

The hangtime is what gets me. We are kicking from like our 45, he is consistently kicking the ball so high that it might be only a 45 yard kick but it forces a fair catch at the 10 because of the height.

His story is so hilarious to me, might be my favorite player. And read a story about him that he didn't realize he accepted a scholarship to a traditionally black college till he arrived on campus...nor did he care. He is just awesome. Cant wait for his first official tackle, the guy is ripped too, that will be fun.

I read that too, and it's just an awesome, hilarious detail.

There are multiple issues at play with Baker and the offense and among the chief concerns are the ones you've cited above. To add/summarize (in my opinion):
  • Baker doesn't trust his offensive line and it's abundantly clear. He's developed happy feet, ball patting, and is rushing easy throws that have been routine for him throughout his career
  • Baker is "big play happy" and has yet to put his words into action about trusting the checkdown or easy yardage plays
  • Playcalling has been suspect and - to your point - taking far too long to get the call in
  • Too many long-developing plays/routes
  • Defenses have adjusted to Baker and he's struggling to read defenses pre-snap.
I expected to see chemistry and communication issues early this season. However, there are bigger issues at play that need to be addressed quickly. I don't think there's anything on that list that is "unfixable;" but they need to make these changes rapidly or the season can slip away quickly over the next 5 games.

I have to think his teammates love him, normally punters are invisible to other players, but the guy is awesome. He is hilarious, great punter, and an actual work out fanatic like other "real" football players.

Honestly if he put on 35lbs of muscle he could play linebacker, lol.

I wish our schedule was flipped, easy first half hard 2nd. He is looking good on allot plays, but looking bad on quite a few, and all for the reasons you said.

Last year he just played, but like allot of good QB's in their 2nd year, he is over thinking things, getting frozen a bit by the speed of the game and size of the players. He will adjust in my opinion. We are complaining about a game on the road where he just threw for 300 yards and one TD and 1 INT and won by 20. In perspective we would have donated a Kidney 2 years ago to have such QB issues, lol.

A few thoughts:

  • I can't remember the last time I felt this uneasy after a 20 point win

  • Baker has not looked good at all the first two games. Minus the short throw and long run by OBJ, he's 18/34 for 234 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT, and 3 sacks. He looked lost, didn't know where to put the ball, and was indecisive.

  • I don't see a way to fix the O-Line this season barring an impactful trade. Scheme and play calling can help, but both of our starting tackles should really be backups. There's only so much you can do.

  • With all the players the Jets had out, that might wind up being the worst team we play all year.

  • Getting Higgins and Callaway back will really help the offense. OBJ was doubled pretty much every play. They need another threat to catch the ball (just guys getting healthy) and that should open things up down the field.

  • Slightly worried about Njoku. Our tights ends behind him look really slow and un-athletic. Might be a blessing in disguise given our o-line sucks. Maybe just need the extra blocking help.

  • Need to find more ways to get the ball in Chubb's hands. Jets were blitzing like crazy. Only real way to slow down a blitz is establishing the run. Again comes back to OLine issue, but it needs to be a focus moving forward.

I don't mind the refs making OBJ change his visor, but forcing him out of the game on 3rd and goal was complete horse shit. They should have said he had to change it when the drive concluded. If they didn't notice it prior to Williams snitching on him, that's their own fault.
