2020 Off-Season Rumors/News

What are people expecting Domingo Santana to get?

He looks like a minor league contract or small 1-year deal type guy to me.

That sounds about right, he's going to continue being a K in 1/3 of his at-bats. His lack of consistent offense is not going to outweigh his positionless skillset on a team that already has Franmil Reyes and Bobby Bradley.

I don't think the Indians view him as a guy who can play RF consistently.

His defensive numbers were atrocious last year out there. Might as well play Franmil every day in RF and give Bobby Bradley a shot at DH.

I'd be for bringing him in to compete though. We have so many guys, somebody has to figure it out. It's not like they're untalented. There are multiple former top 100 prospects in the group.

Yes, I’d only go for a minor league or a super super cheap 1 year deal that can get cut quick with little damage for Domingo.

27 year old who was injury plagued a bit last year, but is 2 years away from a 3 WAR season. Has also played at least league average defense before, as recently as 2018, so not entirely impossible to play him out there.

That’s the kind of minimum risk I would take. Still young, history of production, and something we lack outside of Franmil in the OF in the form of a big RH power bat.

When looking at Domingo's fielding numbers, I think it's also important to point out that his extending innings at LF- a position he has played very sparingly in the past- really weigh down his numbers

LF- 1 error every 56 innings (9 errors in 5110 innings)
RF- 1 error every 118 innings (3 errors in 355 innings)

Still a bad defender, but worth noting that last year's awful metrics probably look better if he wasn't playing "out of position"

Many appologies are due for the way my "Swimming around in mediocrity is no fun for anyone." comment was taken and devolved into pages of bickering.

I should have been more specific in saying that was how the years prior to José receiving everyday at bats felt. And was a reason I didn't follow the team for a long stretch. José and Cookie are people who you tune in to see as their love for the game is apparent every outting. Clevinger is the same way. Same can be said for the charisma of Tito. That type of talent and attitude is a huge draw.

With Pluto mentioning the Tribe being active in the trade market for an outfielder and a reliever, I wonder what it would cost to pry Trey Mancini and Mychal Givens from Baltimore.

What makes that the best source to you?

Because no one else is taking all the available information and compiling it together. There is no bias, there is no fandom influence, its just a break down of the financials, and no one else does this.

I'd do a minor league deal with ST invite. He isn't worth more than that, IMO.

The Indians had the opportunity to extend a qualifying offer of 1 yr $18m to Michael Brantley last year. Brantley was a homegrown talent, is a superior player to Ozuna, and would've had draft pick compensation attached to him. They didn't.

It's certainly fair to be upset that they didn't extend that offer to Brantley, but knowing what happened last offseason, there should've been 0 expectation that they would have ever been in on Ozuna. The same applies to Castellanos
Forgot about that. That is...appalling. Especially considering $5m was wasted on Salazar and $15m was spent on Kipnis.

They didn't really have a choice on Kip since he was locked in.

And in fairness, the Indians had to make this decision before the offseason really began. They knew they were going to have to cut a considerable amount of salary and Brantley signing the QO would've made things even more complicated. I doubt they knew they could find a take for Alonso's $9m option at no cost or that they could essentially turn 1 year of Edwin into 2 years of Santana

If the Indians knew this, why wouldn't they extend the QO? Free draft pick with little "risk" of Brantley returning at $18m

No one would have signed him off that QO. They also weren’t going to spoil his long term earnings potential, they owed him that much.

But had they offered him the QO you’re now left with a guy who didn’t want to be there with a lot of pull in the locker room while you’re trying to win a title. Not a good combo. Could they have tried to do that and win him over? Maybe, but his coaching staff and teammates weren’t the problem so it wouldn’t have done much.

I think the Brantley argument is moot, if I remember correctly he didn't want to stay here at all, only thing we could have done is an extreme over pay, which 18 million is not, to convince him to stay long term.

The other thing they could have done is extend the offer to get the draft compensation, but there might be some reason we didn't like a favor to the agent in order to be in good graces? Hard to know what goes on behind the closed doors, but it was made clear to the front office and fans Brantley wanted out of Cleveland and I remember that.
