Florida is going to be a shit show. My aunt and uncle went down to Florida for the winter and there has been little to no intervention. They even kept Spring Break activities going.

EDIT - Marcus beat me to it. Unbelievable.

snowbird here, seriously wondering if we should go back to Ohio until this is over. Thing holding me back is my wife, who is at risk, is better isolated here than she would be in Ohio where we have more family. Ohio handling this so much better than most states.

That's really good communication coming out from DeWine.

The entire country--and a lot of our conversation--has been fixated on testing. But it's so far behind that it's really not worth much right now in terms of knowledge. Its value is in "Hey, this person's really fucking sick. What treatment should we give them to save their life?"

Need to ramp up testing capacity. It's not just about identifying the ones who need medical treatment.

Economy gets worse with time if we can't identify the people who have already contracted it, recovered, and are now immune. As that group grows in size, it becomes safe for those people to get return to normal life. Cant' do that if we can't identify who they are.

Ron DeSantis will shoulder much of the blame, and he rightfully should. He should have shut down bars, restaurants, and beaches at least a week or two ago. Instead, he left it up to local officials to do it. Not all of them complied. Hell, he hasn't even completely shut down restaurants - he just ordered them to operate at half capacity.

In fact, Florida is going to be a big reason why the coronavirus situation in the US is about to get even more volatile, I feel.

People are going to pick up illness while they're there, travel back to their homes (wherever in the country that may be) and spread it even further.

Why was H1n1 etc so different? How did we get through other ones without all this?

I dunno from what I can tell the mortality was just lower right? CDC estimate said 60 million people had it in this country (which seems high..but ok) and 12,000 died. So youre looking like a .02% mortality rate. Which when compared to this thing around 1% is pretty low.

Unless Russia is shutting down the internet, it would seem that reports of mass infection/illness would leak out. Maybe it has, but I haven't seen anything. But I could see a pretty good argument that a country as turned in on itself as Russia is -- comparatively speaking -- may actually be doing pretty well. Russia is far away from both Italy and from the population centers in China from which this arose. And there just aren't as many Russian tourists flying around an on cruise ships as there are from many other countries.

China...either China is lying, or this disease isn't as easily transmitted as thought, and/or there is a very significant number of people who get it and are relatively asymptomatic. As badly as China screwed up early on, it should have ended up infecting a lot more than 80-90k people.

If it wasn't as easily transmitted, we would be seeing it carried around the globe as easily and quickly as it has been.

This is why I question China more than anything. The virus came from their lab. Did they have a protocol in place to deal with this if it escaped or do they know things about the virus they purposely aren't sharing with the rest of the world? With what we've seen in other parts of the world, their infected population should be significantly higher than it is outside of Wuhan.

The other problem is since China didn't share the real issue early on, they bought up the majority of the needed supplies for prevention which they of course manufacture.

If this gets too political feel free to delete it. That's what I worry with about China. Given their human rights history, their government would have no issue releasing a virus that kills a few thousand Chinese people but sends the world into political and economic uncertainty, opening a window for them to start pushing into other countries like Hong Kong, North and South Korea, etc.

Get the fuck out of there, man. I've noticed people are generally resistant to changing plans, then they hit the breakthrough moment and realize this thing is a total game changer. For example: for a week I was trying to tell my folks that plans for vacations and family visits need to be put on hold. Just Friday my dad was trying to talk me into flying to Cleveland to a high school reunion. Then, a few days later, the light bulb went off and they agree it's time to shut off all plans until the medical and science world gives the green light.

Florida is, right now, filled with college kids and people in their mid-20s who want to shut off all inhibitions. They are partying and making out with strangers. It's going to be bad before it gets better. Do you want to be stuck there for months if the state boarders get shut down?

It's becoming clear that the government is trying to but doesn't have the resources to do so. That along with the fact that thousands of people are getting tests done simply for peace of mind.

I keep seeing stories of people with plenty of symptoms struggling to get tests but all these basketball players don't seem to have a problem getting tested. Not sure how that makes much sense.

If you're going to be isolating yourself in your house anyway, is it worth the additional risk inherent in travelling, especially overnight?

Someone convince me not to sell everything not in my retirement account.
