Story of my first game:
I'll never forget, my father got suite tickets at the brand new Jacobs Field. I was, I believe, about 6 at the time and the whole family went. I don't remember much about the game, but I do remember the last thing to happen. It was an Albert Belle walk off home run.
I was so excited, I remember how loud it was in that stadium and how everyone reacted as soon as he hit it, he absolutely crushed it.
After we left, my parents took my brothers and I to go get autographs after the game while the players walked to their cars. I specifically remember wanting to get Albert Belle's because of the home run. One by one, as the players came out, I waited for my dad to point him out to me. I remember seeing Kenny Lofton, but he had a flock of girls around him.
Soon Belle came out and you would have thought a killer was after him the way he ran through the gated setup. I don't think I've ever see him run as fast ever since. I was crushed, asking my dad if he could get him back so he could sign whatever I had to sign. I was starting to get upset when another player was coming down the line.
Carlos Baerga.
Now I don't remember what he did in that game, but I'll never forget the next few moments and is one of the most impressionable moments of my young life. He saw how upset I was and he waved me up to the barrier. He signed my game ticket and offered my mom and dad to take a photo with him. Was probably the coolest thing I'd ever done in my entire life at that point, I was so excited. I kept that ticket for at least 10 years until we moved out of the house we were living in. I still regret not being able to find that ticket.
Carlos Baerga instantly became my favorite player. I wore 9 because of him, I played 2nd in T-Ball and little league, and let me tell you, I balled my fucking eyes out the day he was traded for Jeff Kent. Sure I'd move on a few seasons later and eventually I'd get more favorite players, but Carlos was my first ever "favorite" player in any sport and I'll never forget that moment.
