BROWNS OFF-SEASON 2020

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah. I mean we slayed them in Baltimore early last season. Weirder things have happened.

I believe there is talk of expanded practice squads due to the illness, so all the preseason invites just get to be secret weapons. I see no downside, sorry.

Not good for week one against Baltimore. Don’t think it will be pretty

Little happens in preseason games besides churning the bottom of the roster. More practice time is probably better. College teams do fine with no preseason.

ETA: not that it applies this season anyway, but preseason games at full price is BULLSHIT.

Probably not, but on the flip side, they'll have no idea what we're going to do with no tape on us, whereas we'll be reasonably sure what they're going to do with a year's worth of tape on them.

RBF Insiders are telling me:

That Lamar Jackson will probably run the ball a lot, and pass some.

If the difference between success and failure is organizational competency, where do the Browns fall? Old Browns? No brainer...they'd fail big time. This year's version? I strangely have faith in them.

Just announced: Zero preseason games.

Good news for everyone... aside from owners who charge people for meaningless games starring nobodies.
Getting charged for any sort of tickets this year would be a blessing. The owners should take advantage of how desperate people will be to get out of the house in 2021 and add 4 more preseason games. Maybe require fans to also pay for a spring league before the draft once college football falls through.

Pro Football Focus is rating units on the defensive side of the ball. Here is the write up about linebackers:

31. CLEVELAND BROWNS
With Joe Schobert moving on to the Jaguars, the Browns lose a valuable piece of their back seven and will trot out one of the younger linebacking units in the league. In 2019, the Browns drafted Sione Takitaki in the third round and Mack Wilson in the fifth, but it was Wilson who played 942 snaps on his way to a 41.7 overall grade that ranked eighth-worst in the NFL. Takitaki played just 105 snaps, showing well against the run with a 75.1 grade.

In this year’s draft, the Browns added Jacob Phillips, another run-first player who struggled to a 52.2 coverage grade last year at LSU. The Browns will heavily count on all three players in 2020. Cleveland also signed B.J. Goodson to a one-year deal, and he should provide early-down value — he’s graded at 67-0 plus against the run in two of his three full seasons.

Trevon Young and Jermaine Grace round out the depth chart with their 18 career snaps. The Browns had one of the NFL's worst linebacking units a year ago, and they enter 2020 with plenty of question marks among their young players.

And D-Line:

12. CLEVELAND BROWNS
Before his season was brought to a self-inflicted premature close last season, Myles Garrett was on track to be the most dominant edge rusher in the league. His PFF pass-rush grade through 10 games was 91.6, tied for the best mark in the league and by far the best of his career to date. He had 49 pressures and was on track to set a new career best by at least 11 by the end of the year. If Garrett can hit 2020 with the same form he had in 2019, he will be one of the game’s best defenders and a force to be reckoned with for the Browns.

Olivier Vernon and Sheldon Richardson return as starters. While neither played badly last season, both players are capable of more and the team will be hoping to get some better play out of them in 2020. Larry Ogunjobi likely makes up the other starting member of the defensive line, but he will be pushed for playing time by Andrew Billings on base downs, while rookie Jordan Elliott hopes to earn playing time rushing the passer. Elliott had the highest PFF pass-rushing grade of any interior defender in the SEC last season, ahead of first-round talents such as Javon Kinlaw and Derrick Brown. He was a first-round talent according to PFF’s Big Board and could be an impact player for Cleveland if he can maintain that level of play.

Adrian Clayborn provides a really useful rotational body who has averaged over 50 total pressures for the past three seasons. Clayborn is particularly adept at beating up on sub-standard tackles and can dominate games against the right opponent.

I won't argue against the linebacker rankings, but the Browns defensive line has the talent and depth to push into the top 5. They had the potential to be a top five line last year but they had no depth. This year they passed on linebacker upgrades to prioritize quality veteran depth along with Elliot. I really look forward to improved pass defense coaching which will allow this group to shine.
