This could be really interesting, because I'm guessing analytics would tell you not to spend that much on an interior lineman, and we do have a lot of analytics guys in the organization. But who knows?
@Jordan
Teller is just such a freaking beast....
It depends on what "analytics" you go by. For example, I know PFF (at least last time I checked) stupidly overvalued WR's.
But, I'm willing to bet there are a lot of analytic models out there that say the interior offensive line is undervalued, and has a high amount of impact on both the run and pass games.
Personally? I think an elite interior offensive line is the second most important position on offense after QB.
I have talked about this previously, but I have a small regression model that looks at this.
My general finding is that, individually, you do not want to overpay for an offensive linemen. Houston giving Tunsil that contract should be considered a bad analytical move.
With that said, there is an additional after-effect once you have five good offensive linemen together. I.E., if you look at all of the PFF grades, counting stats, etc. (you pick which), it is lower than the effect of an offensive line as a whole. So, for example, let's say your offensive line's collective performance is worth 1-2
wins added - which is some kind of b.s. stat, but would be one of the three best lines in the NFL. What you generally would expect to see is an extra ~.2 wins added, that is ostensibly a latent variable and we are not exactly sure how to measure it, but we know it exists.
The Browns have a phenomenal offensive line. While Teller, by himself, may not be worth that extension, the Browns absolutely should re-sign him to a nice contract. If I have a crappy model that says that, and they are seriously talking about this type of contract, my guess is that they have something similar.
