Cleveland Browns 2020 Regular Season: What a Ride!

If Teller continues to play the way he has been I think we have to lock him up. I'll admit I don't know much about other offensive guards in the NFL, so I would not know where to rank him. Is he among the best in the league? Is he around top 10 in the league? Would the Browns be comfortable paying him big money for just one outstanding season? I'm not sure. But I think if we go based off that average top-10 salary and get him in the $12-$13 million range per year you have to do that.

It depends on what "analytics" you go by. For example, I know PFF (at least last time I checked) stupidly overvalued WR's.

But, I'm willing to bet there are a lot of analytic models out there that say the interior offensive line is undervalued, and has a high amount of impact on both the run and pass games.

Personally? I think an elite interior offensive line is the second most important position on offense after QB.
What makes Teller so special is that he was pegged as the guy who would win every fight in a phone booth, but was kind of lumbering and couldn't block on the move. But damn, he pulls and traps like an absolute champ. He almost has that RB type of vision where he knows the exact moment to commit to the right block. He never hesitates or blocks the hole because he's indecisive, and he knows when to go through the hole and get a second level guy if the hole is already there. And if the hole is not there, he'll crash into the best spot to at least try to get 2-3 yards out of the play.

Watching him barrel downhill from the end zone camera view, so you can see what the DB is seeing, is hilarious. I don't care who it is, the guy's life has to flash in front of his eyes.

Especially in this system. It's not a coincidence that our run game felt a bit off with Teller and Chubb out. Teller appears to be the lead blocker in half of our running plays. I think that trust and timing he has with Chunt is invaluable.

This could be really interesting, because I'm guessing analytics would tell you not to spend that much on an interior lineman, and we do have a lot of analytics guys in the organization. But who knows? @Jordan

Teller is just such a freaking beast....

I have talked about this previously, but I have a small regression model that looks at this.

My general finding is that, individually, you do not want to overpay for an offensive linemen. Houston giving Tunsil that contract should be considered a bad analytical move.

With that said, there is an additional after-effect once you have five good offensive linemen together. I.E., if you look at all of the PFF grades, counting stats, etc. (you pick which), it is lower than the effect of an offensive line as a whole. So, for example, let's say your offensive line's collective performance is worth 1-2 wins added - which is some kind of b.s. stat, but would be one of the three best lines in the NFL. What you generally would expect to see is an extra ~.2 wins added, that is ostensibly a latent variable and we are not exactly sure how to measure it, but we know it exists.

The Browns have a phenomenal offensive line. While Teller, by himself, may not be worth that extension, the Browns absolutely should re-sign him to a nice contract. If I have a crappy model that says that, and they are seriously talking about this type of contract, my guess is that they have something similar.

if Conklin fails a tests were screwed since Hubbard is also on the covid list.

Just a terrible day news wise for us.

Agree. And it's even more important when you have an undersized QB. We have a really good chance to secure an identity as an Elite running and blocking team. Let's not mess this up. #paytheman

If all those dudes test positive then cancel the game. Fuck it. I’d rather it be canceled or pushed out than take a loss being down key players.

Browns should be okay, as long as one of Conklin/Hubbard is cleared... Hubbard was able to fill-in admirably when Conklin was out for one game; I'd say Teller was the bigger miss when he was out... It also still is Wednesday, so chance they are cleared by Sunday..

Parkey would be the biggest miss of those three considering how efficient he's been and his experience kicking in Cleveland weather (Especially with it looking like another poor weather game)... Browns do have Matt McCrane on their PS for reasons like this but his experience is more limited..

We would survive, we have a kicker on our reserve list, someone is our backup long snapper and we can replace a right tackle even if not optimal, it sucks, but they wont cancel the game for those 4 players, (Hubbard too) and its not up to the Browns, its up to the league and other teams have had more difficult Covid loses.

Didn’t we use a back long snapper for a second a few years ago, with disastrous results? I remember at some point being overcome with the realization that having a competent long snapper is actually really important.

As long as those guys don’t test positive themselves, there’s enough time where all three can be cleared for Sunday’s game.

What's Ryan Pontbriand doing these days?
