2020 Offseason

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

I wonder if they will try to do the same type of deal with Memphis now that they have the roster space back open. It’s a small impact kind of move, but one that can’t happen unless you have an owner willing to pay an extra 400-500K just to acquire a 2nd round pick well off in the future.
I wouldn't mind Josh Jackson at all.

I’ve wanted this guy for a while. But at this point it’s obvious the nba isn’t for him. Hopefully he can develop.
I like it. I wanted the Cavs to sign Harry Giles and this is the same kind of low risk, high upside signing. Maker has all the physical ability in the world, but he’s been a 7-footer who wants to play guard, like so many big guys nowadays. Thon’s brother, Maker, is supposed to be a pretty good prospect.

I personally preferred Thon to Giles because Thon is a better shot blocker and has more range offensively. Fits todays game better then Giles imo. Would have been happy with either though. Glad we got Thon until we find out hes part of final cuts.

After Drummond was traded it looks like Maker started the next four games at center for the Pistons. He played 24-34 minutes each game, averaging 28.5. He shot 60% from the field and was 5-for-12 on 3's (41.7%). He averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.5 blocks. Not bad at all. But his next two starts he got 18 and 16 minutes and after six games was replaced by Christian Wood for the rest of the season.

Detroit won only three of their last 14 games and in those three wins Maker barely played and scored a total of four points. In fact, looking at every game the Pistons won the most he ever scored in a win was 10 points and in 16 wins he scored four points or less. It looks like they came to the conclusion that they did better when Maker was on the bench.

Looking at the Pistons on/off numbers for last year, Maker was the third worst on the team at -10.8 points per 100 possessions which put him in only the 14th percentile. Drummond was -1.5. The team leader was John Henson with a +17.0 in only 188 minutes.

Offensively the Pistons were -6.0 with Maker on the floor and defensively they allowed 4.8 points more, so he hurt them both offensively and defensively but more offensively. I'm not sure how he gets minutes with Drummond and McGee at the 5. He's going into his fifth year in the league so he's not a raw project anymore. Still, they wanted to get longer and more athletic so he at least has that going for him.

By the way, Henson was second on the Cavs last year at +8.5. He really makes bad teams much better. I think he's one of the more underrated big men in the game. His on/off differential with the Cavs put him in the 91st percentile and that 17 point differential in Detroit after we traded him for Drummond put him in the 99th percentile. He's an unrestricted free agent.

Dude who cares, it's not like this guy is gonna get PT.

Last years cavs squad was remarkably bad defensively pretty much across the board. Nance Jr was the best net defender, being the only player to carry an above average PER and hold his opponents under average at a position he actually played most of the time. Dean Wade nearly made it at PF as well. But pretty much everybody else was a turnstyle, including Tristan..

So this year we have Drummond and McGee who are at least PER positive at center and IMO we should pay them there with Love at the 4, relieved by Nance or Wade, and with Nance claiming some minutes at the three. Obviously Okoru and Windler will play at the three, but I would be surprised if either of them were net positive in that position early on. If we ran Sexton at point and Dotsun, Exum or even Osman at the 2, that should be our best line. In order for anyone else to reach par, they are going to have to take a major step forward. Garland and Porter were both defensively challenged last year, and Windler did not play enough to know. We experimented with Porter playing the point last year, and we might give that another shot, unless Garland breaks out.

So net net, we are not much changed since last year. The improvement if we get any will be because somebody we already have got better, and especially at defense.

Competent coaching and getting the players to execute the team defense will improve team and individual defensive metrics. Bickerstaff is who I'm looking at to improve the defense. I'm not going to worry about individual defensive shortcomings until I see how they execute a defensive scheme under a coach they presumably haven't quit on yet.

fter waiving Rayjon Tucker early Saturday afternoon, the Cavs have 14 NBA players under contract. Lamar Stevens and Matt Mooney are both on two-way deals. The Cavs have also agreed to Exhibit 10 contracts with 2019 undrafted swingman Charles Matthews and Canton Charge center Marques Bolden.
