Car Advice

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
So I might be looking for car this summer if work goes back to the office.

I have a very narrow set of parameters that I have already researched (no Teslas!).

Does anyone have experience with late model Jaguars, 2010 and later, or later model BMW 5 & 6-Series?

On the topic of EVs, but not Tesla, anyone have a Polestar?
I doubt you are going to find anyone with a Polestar, especially in the US.
I don't know why you are saying "no Teslas!", but I love the Model S. If you are considering electrics, have you looked at the Audi E-Tron? That's another excellent choice.
Make sure you have a 220v system in your garage.

I would personally steer you away from 2000-2009 BMWs, especially the 325, 525 and 535 models. The risk/reward ratio is not in your favor. There's some unique M-Series if you are into performance though.

Don't want an EV, and don't want to be talked into it.

No Teslas because everyone here has one. And I don't want an EV. I want to reiterate I don't want an EV and I don't want this thread to turn into a Tesla thread.

I saw a Polestar on Sunday. It was sharp. It was different.

I ask because I am curious it because it is new.

Yeah, I am not going older than 2014 for either the Jaguar or BMW.

Out of curiosity, what was wrong with the 2000-2009 BMWs? Poor reliability?

I can tell you owning a modern BMW without a warranty is about the worst financial decision you could make when it comes to buying a car.

BMW's have been unreliable for decades. Fantastic to drive, horrific to own. Former 2011 335i owner. I traded it in once the 4 year warranty was up.

Oh, I forgot maintenance, unless you have a good independent BMW shop near you, you will pay out the nose for even basic maintenance.

Yeah, that is the downside of not wanting to buy the new model of something.

In this case, it is not about cost in terms of me not wanting to buy a 2017 or later Jag or BMW, but the EU mandated changes that forced European automakers to ditch the big V8 engines in their sedans.

The pre-2016 Jaguar XFs have a 5.0 liter, V8 engine that pumps out 510 HP for the XFR. It is an elegant monster and a modern classic. The Pre-2017 650i had 440 HP.

Their more recent offerings are limited to the V6s and capped at the mid-to-high 300s HP range. Which is middling, boring and unremarkable.

There is a robust tuning scene for BMW's. My 2011 335i was stage 2(simple piggy back tune, undetectable once removed) and I smoked that gen's V8 M3 to 60, then the V8 would start to over take me and pass me around 75 to 80.

This area is rife with Yobs and their rice burners with huge spoilers and silly mufflers. They always drive recklessly or try to race people.

I want to show them how a gentleman does it. In a low-key fashion so they never see their humiliation coming.

No one expects a stately four door sedan that isn't a 7-Series BMW or 8-Series Audi to have 500+ HP engine and can go 0-60 in under 4 seconds!

This video is a good review of that XFR. It flies. It is gorgeous without being flashy. It isn't ordinary.

When I had the 335i, the kids at the office with STI's would always want to race me. Besides the one guy who had put on a huge turbo, they all lost to me. I'd always point out that I had the adult version of the STI, and to enjoy the feeling of driving on a broken pogo stick since their ride was so horribly harsh.

XFR is a fantastic car.

Mazda has very quietly started to turn themselves into a luxury brand. Check out the interiors of their current gen 3 and 6. They just need to add the powertrain to play with the Germans.

Speaking of playing with the Germans, my Grand Cherokee lease is up here in a few months, currently looking at a Genesis G70 if I want performance, and the Volvo S60 if I want pure luxury. I find the Volvo's to be simply gorgeous inside and out.

Yeah, Pogo stick is a good analogy. The Jags and BMWs are so smooth and quiet. That video is a perfect example, dude is cruising at 165 MPH on the autobahn and the only thing you hear are the wipers...

We test drove a Mazda in 2018 when we got the Audi. I was impressed. As you say, the interior was great.

The new Volvos are amazing. I love the new interiors, and the massaging seats are quite nice.

Grand Cherokees are good. Because of my offroad needs I have only ever looked at Jeep and Land Rover for my SUVs. If it weren't for that requirement I think I would have bought the XC60.

Jags and BMW's have the most expensive maintenance and repair costs. They aren't cheap to repair simple issues like an alternator or starter.

I'd suggest you buy something with a certified warranty if you go that route.

Lexus is another option, they have the best certified warranty on the market.

It's going to be interesting where Mazda is at after another 2 generations.

I moved from the 335i to the Grand Cherokee because I'm in the snow belt. While the 335i was a tank on the streets(x-drive with x-ice2 snow tires) I didn't have the ground clearance coming home from work with a mound of snow at the end of the drive way from the snow plows. Leaving her idle in the streets while I ran up the drive way in work shoes and pants, to dress for getting the snow blower out, and worrying the entire time that a snow truck could come by and wreck my paint at any moment got super old.

Basically working from home since March really wants me to get back into a sports sedan even though I know it's a really bad idea.

This is the logical step.

Unfortunately, its no longer possible with Pre-2016 vehicles.

Unfortunately, thanks to the EU, all the BMWs and Jaguars that have certified warranties lack character, flavor and are really nothing special.

Piddly V6s.

Anyone have a Mercedes E63?
