Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

Looks like Baker is betting on himself. Gonna give it another year before worrying about an extension.

I hope he has a fucking career year. IDGAF on what it means for his extension or if he gets 40+ million. I want him to blow the doors off the league and prove he has grown as a QB. Let's forget about looking for a new QB for awhile.

I just caught up reading the posts since April 5th.

I want my 5 minutes back.

The best case scenario was always Baker signs for what his current value is, then blows up. But also the least likely.

The next best scenario is that Baker blows up, and we pay him as such. Playing 40mil for a top QB is always worth it.

I dont care if we pay him on current value or $40M per. I'd just prefer it be *before* the TV deal blows everything up.

I realize I’m in the minority on this, but I’d lock him up to a big extension today.

People will say stuff like “there’s no reason to, what if he regresses or has another season like 2019, it’ll ruin the team for several years”. I don’t care, I don’t see that as particularly likely.

It’s better for the team to get something done now. The Browns are only hurting themselves by not doing it sooner, as they will potentially be spending considerably more the longer they wait. That could be the difference between being able to retain other top-level talent in a couple years.

With that said, I’m guessing at this point the wanting to wait is as much on Baker as it is the team. With the confidence he has, it sounds like Baker thinks he can play his way into a $40+ mil/year contact, especially when the salary cap is expected to jump another $30-50 mil next season.

I’m sure Baker would sign for an average $34 mil per year for 4 or 5 years if it was offered to him today. By the end of that extension, that wouldn’t even be top 10 QB money in terms of annual salary.

As long as Baker has a floor of slightly above average QB in a worst case scenario, that isn’t an untradeable contract if we had to move on in 3 years. Not even close.

The only reason you wouldn’t do it from the Browns side is if you feel you might have to move on from him before that.

Why do you think you're in the minority? I'm not sure there's a single person on this board who's against the Browns signing Baker to an extension today. The only person who doesn't want to sign an extension right now is Baker.

I'm not sure of that all. In fact, unless we guaranteed the vast majority of the contract, I am pretty sure that'd be denied instantly.
You think? It would probably be declined because it’s a negotiation, but I think that is right on the money. Actually. It’s too much IMO, but it’s sall about timing. I’d push to get it done sooner than later. We don’t want Allen and Jackson contracts to be the starting point.

Here's the thing....I think Berry has earned a lot of trust from fans. If he hasn't yet signed Baker to an extension, it's for a very good reason. Most likely (as has been said), that Baker wants to bet on himself, and won't sign a non-ridiculous extension now.

Which is great, until baker’s agent says “we’re not going to negotiate until the other sign”
I mean, Deshaun and Dak are the goalposts that Baker and his agent would be using today.

Anyone saying Baker would gladly agree to a less-than-market deal right now is basing that on pretty much nothing.

Are you suggesting that Baker sexually harass dozens of massage therapists?

I mean, it’s the NFL.

Injury risk is always a concern, and Baker’s own inconsistent performance the last three years has not done him many favors. $40+ mil per year is far from a lock.

In fact, I’d go as far to say that if he only has a “good, but not great” year this upcoming season, he won’t be getting $40 mil/year guaranteed.

In light of that, locking in $34-35 mil now for the next few years isn’t a bad gamble at all.

Convince Baker of that and you have yourself a deal.

The organization would do flips if they could lock up our franchise QB for an out-of-date price tag, instead of what franchise QB's are currently getting, or what they will get next year when the cap goes back up.
