With the rollover 20M and the cap ballooning back up next year(probably) + the overall flexibility we have, I think we can actually extend ANY and ALL of our main FA(Ward, Chubb, Baker, Teller, Harrison)

The issue will be I years 2 and 3 of those new deals, where something will have to give. But I believe, if they want to and think its the smart thing to do, they can "keep the band together" for another 2-3 seasons after this one.

That said, I doubt they will do that and will likely continue to exercise good control and will power in not creating a bad cap situation with little flexibility.
When you wrote this post, did you assume that all our contracts that are already signed stay level year-over-year? Because that's an easy trap to fall into and is not the case. Baker's contract goes up 8 million next year, and you can only imagine where it can go after that. Myles's last "cheap" year is 2022 before ballooning up to a 29 million dollar cap number in 2023. Overthecap is a nice site to look at some of these things, just click through the years. https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/cleveland-browns/

Whether it's 2022 or a year shortly following, we're going to have to make some tough decisions. It's just a reality that we won't be able to keep all our players. It's best to accept that now and start deciding on priorities. I'd rather let someone like Wyatt Teller or OBJ walk than let Chubb or Denzel Ward leave.

Definitely tough decisions to make and they are the good kind to have to make, as they result from an uber talented roster. I send a lot of time on OTC and Spotrac. I just think we specifically have some wiggle room and grey area between letting 1-2 guys walk in FA next year* and extending them all/keeping them all together for the life of those contracts.

What we have is a good combo of:

-Our current 20M rollover
-The likelihood the 2022 cap jumps higher than expected due to course correction from covid recovery and the new Amazon deal
-The flexibility we have with some of our critical contracts(OBJ, Landry, Bitonio, Tretter, Keenum, and Hunt)
-The flexibility from a potentially doing early Baker or Ward extensions that reduce their 2022 cap number

I am not trying to be one of those "the cap doesn't matter" guys who doesn't acknowledge that tough decisions will have to be made pretty much in this offseason and every one going forward, I just think we will be in pretty great shape to pivot in multiple directions, depending on how Berry, DePo, and the staff see best fit.

Agreed, especially with the use of "pivot."

I hope my post didn't come across as overly confrontational. I know that's always my tone, but I know assuming flat contracts is something I subconsciously do at times.

Great article ($) in The Athletic today about Callie Brownson and her journey to the Browns. Interesting factoid is that she still maintains a good friendship with Brian Daboll of the Bills whom she worked with back in 2019. Wonder if she could be on the move if he gets a HC job in the next year or two.

Brian Daboll as a hot head coaching candidate will never not seem crazy to me.

Guy deserves major credit for turning his attitude around. Read an article about him like six months ago and totally forgot he was only 34 when he got hired on as OC under Mangini. He didn't listen to his players very much and was pretty hard-headed. After washing out with the Dolphins and Chiefs, I think he really took to heart the lessons he learned in his second stint under Belichick and his one season as OC under Nick Saban.

While I've learned not to develop expectations when it comes to guys and their money, I just have a gut feeling that Nick Chubb won't demand a huge contract. Derrick Henry got 4 years, 50 million (25 guaranteed) just last offseason. I just don't see Nick going higher than that and if so, not by much. Is Nick worth 12 million per? Absolutely and I imagine our front office would deliver that contract on a silver platter.

I could be wrong and Nick could demand BIG bucks, but he doesn't seem like the type. Hope I didn't jinx it though :chuckle:

In your world, is Nick Chubb sitting across the table from Andrew Berry negotiating the contract?

The rep from CAA is going to get every dollar he can. He might be aware that Chubb prefers to stay in Cleveland, but he's not going to look at Berry and say "Eh, that's enough."

You make me guess what happens, and with absolutely no information to go off of and giving this thirty seconds of thought, I'm guessing we keep Chubb at a deal that's around 3-years, $45 million, with $27 million guaranteed.

In my world, Grandmaster Berry offers an 11 million dollar contract and doesn't budge. Nick's agent tells Nick the number and advises to wait, but Big Dick Nick says, "I'm signing for 8 million and we're gonna win the Super Bowl." then proceeds to gash the Rams in the SB for 150 yards on the ground.

Is that an "anime" t-shirt?
We seem to be collecting athletic specimens that are also nerds?

Gotta be DePodesta's hand in this!
Or maybe it's that pop culture is becoming more accepted and people aren't being put down for enjoying things they enjoy?

Good for him. I'm sure @sportscoach is loving it.... or maybe DBZ is a bit too mainstream for his exquisite anime tastes?
