2021 MLB Draft / College Baseball Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I know we were going to focus on pitchers but this is ridiculous.

Did we really have that much of a need with our young core of Bieber, Plesac, Civale, Kar and Clase? Unless you are planning to trade pitching for hitting (as they can’t figure out how to hire a hitting instructor worth a damn).

-Pitchers get injured and more typically severely than position players.

-A lot of belief Plesac is not here for long

-A lot of young hitting talent from the international pipeline in lower levels.

-Could be a one year transitional approach. They know the data and makeup of the pitchers they have had consistent developmental success with. With the loss of scouting opps due to Covid and the downsizing of live scouting, they may be still in the lab creating a new model/profile/approach for draft hitters that they felt they needed more time to tweak. In the meantime, they double down on s strategy they have proven to be able to capitalize on.

- Could be anticipating protecting more bats than arms from the rule5 draft and believe they’ll lose a bit from that current organizational depth of pitching?

All of those things in concert could be part or all of the reason for the draft results yesterday and today

Soft Tossing College Lefty Number 3

Will Dion
McNeese State (LA) P L/L 4YR JR
5' 10" 180lbs
Dion won Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 9-4 with a 3.07 ERA and a school-record 121 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. He commands his 87-91 mph fastball and pair of breaking pitches well while also earning high marks for his competitiveness.

I get that Boone and Dion aren't power arms, but I think you have mistaken Leftwich for a LHP due to his name. Both Nikhazy and Webb have a solid fastball. Aaron Davenport is the one pick where I am scrambling to find any info.

Where would the Indians be today if they hadn't traded pitchers Kluber, Bauer, and Clevinger?
And, tomorrow (future), after Bieber, Plesac and Civale?

Not a bad strategy, in using your pitching instructors to create ample surplus, but you need opportunities, can't over do a pitcher heavy Arizona squad.

As for Rule 5, these pitchers need 3+ years usually. With 26 man roster 13/13 split and 40 man rosters 20/20 say split, you need a balanced approach to have your 7/7 protected minor leaguers to be evenly split pitchers/hitters.

In 10 College pitchers, you just created another bubble/Rule 5 issues in 3 or so years (as this is year 1 of 4 years till they become eligible) which is when Torres/ Hankins/Allen/ Burns and Espino will be bouncing from AAA to ML based on needs and polishing.

I get we may need to protect more hitters this year for Rule 5, but Round 3-10 pitchers ain't going to help in this 2 year squeeze (where Valera, Rocchio, ... may push the 7/7 split to 10/4 - so need a Burns and Allen in AAA to be called up if needed). 7 more picks not split between College/HS hitter/pitcher just creates another potential bubble.

I don't think we've had as much GAS in the pipeline in decades.

Espino - GAS
Williams - GAS
Hankins - GAS
Vargas - GAS
Torres - GAS
Wolf - LEFTY GAS

I don't even know about the international pitching singings from like 2018 and on. I'm sure there's 1 or 2 who DEAL GAS.
Uhhhhhh Wolf is a RHP.

I disagree with the gut-reaction dismissive tone about questions, which are legitimate, about this draft strategy. I'm not of the belief that we are loaded with bats at the lower levels and anyone looking at recent international signings for guys who are 4-5 years younger than this crop of pitchers we just added are completely missing the mark.

It's an interesting, bold, and purposeful strategy. But fugg it. I'm all in. MOAR COLLEGE ARMS. We can worry about the bats some other time.

That last Florida kid we added is well-versed in dealing GAS. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WE.

Let us hope that we can view this draft similarly to the 2016 draft in 5 years.

The o/u on the # of future starting pitchers in this draft has been set at 3.5

Absolutely, and with our young, cost-controlled rotation depth over the last half-decade, it was ok to take a couple of shots.

Now, we're a bit on the lacking side of depth. So, it makes sense to aim for some higher floor guys, who could move quickly through the system, as we try to rebuild what we had during those peak years.
We're lacking depth or are we lacking ready SP? Our current rotation(when healthy) consists of Bieber, Plesac, Civale and some mix of Quantrill, McKenzie, Hentges, Mejia, Garza, and Morgan. The high upside pitchers that aren't too far off are Espino, Hankins, Vargas, Torres, Wolf, and Burns. The next tier has Cantillo, Allen(Logan T), and a few others. Sprinkle in the college arms they are drafting this year and I personally think the pitching depth is outlandish.

I've always thought if they had quality pitching depth then they could get anything else they needed with it. The trades of Kluber, Bauer, and Clevinger seem to support that idea.

If they’re not ready, they’re not really depth
