2021 MLB Draft / College Baseball Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
At times they have been worse than Plutko, but they've also been better than Plutko could ever hope to be. There is upside with all of these guys except for maybe Morgan. When you consider the lost 2020 season for these guys, I think we're sitting very well for next year's rotation.
Yeah, they can certainly become depth, they can even become more. I was just referring to what they are right now.

Probably one or two improve and help. Hopefully, more. Most will wash out or, best case, end up in the pen. That’s why you keep acquiring more.

This was the draft to be expected, IMO. Think they missed out on their 1A choice for overslotted HS position player, but took one they were actually able to see and are comfortable with.

It was mentioned already, but not only cutbacks on scouting (not a lot got cut on the amateur side, but enough to feel an impact especially during a weird year) but also travel/player restrictions and the amount they were able to see some of the HSers made them take pause going that route.

The Indians were all over the SEC pitchers, they essentially lived in Nashville for a short while and I mentioned this in here. All the smoke was college arms, don't get where any of the HS position player or pitcher smoke came from, especially when they hadn't seen some of the names they were attached to in the weeks leading up to the draft in over a year.

That initial HS overslot target being Kath? Taken one spot ahead of us by the White Sox?

Thanks for your insights and giving the board another shot.

Am I right to assume you’re talking about Wes Kath, who the White Sox took one spot before us? Think I remember you mentioning that before.

Can someone sum up the draft? Picks they like, picks they hate, what they think of our first rounder?

No organization has enough depth to cover losing its top three SPs...actually four, when you count Allen's early arm problems.

It would mean having at least four AAA starters capable of hitting the ground running in MLB....and doing it well.

The Rule Five and minor league free agency does not allow an org to stockpile that much finished talent indefinitely.

*********

While we haven't traded much from our stockpile of minor league starting pitchers recently, other teams have....which is how we ended up with Lee, Kluber, Carrasco, Clevinger, Moss, Wolf, and Cantillo. We did trade Archer and Sheffield.

A decent lower level pitching prospect can sometimes get you a solid rental bat or arm for the stretch run. If you have a plethora of them, it doesnt hurt to trade a few for immediate needs.

Speaking of the old site,
I was cleaning out a bookcase the other day and finally tossed out a few of Tony Lastoria's IBI Prospect Handbooks.
Oh, the names. Makes you remember what a long shot playing in mlb really is.
How could you toss them out??
I have many of those items too and when they are located I get a couple hours of enjoyable reading as I review the projection vs the ultimate outcomes...
How does the saying go: Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it??

Essentially it feels like cause of limited scouting time, no luck getting the bat we wanted we ended up with a lot of college pitchers... It almost felt like they just went BPA college pitchers all day. We drafted one position player, which was a high school SS...

I was working so I haven't gotten to digest it all the way, just know, we just grabbed 10 college arms today who all likely will see A ball time next season...

Ok they have gotten too the soft tossing lefties. They can chill on the college pitching thing now.

I don't think so..... :coffee:

Late on the discussion, but I love the fact we went pretty much all pitchers, like someone said you can never have enough pitching, I think people underestimate the Latin America signings, we are pretty deep in position player sign with more to be sign in the next few weeks…….

Personally I still want a catcher and I still want another Owen Miller/Clement type of bat. I mean we just drafted a starting rotation and bullpen today from the college ranks lol

I'm not a baseball draftnik, but I found this year fascinating leading up. Here's how I saw the analytic front offices look at the 2021 draft:

Last year, there were only 5 rounds. The colleges gave an extra year of eligibility to players who stayed. The end result was essentially a loaded draft for college talent who would have otherwise gone in the 6th through 12th rounds in 2020 if it had been a normal draft. Thanks to a few posters like @Derek today, I learned the Tribe tends to trust college arms for being developed - both a high floor and high ceiling. Well this is just about the most loaded college pitcher draft you are going to find due to COVID-19.
