I wonder how much Love is gonna give up in a buyout. I'd hope for at least $9M.
Any team that would be willing to sign him on the open market right now would provide a much more desirable situation for Love than what he has here. Therefore, the BARE MINIMUM we should expect him to give up in a buyout is the highest price anyone is willing to sign him to over the next two years. If Team Monstars from Planet Bullshit are willing to pay him $15 mil over the next two years and Love would rather be there than here, then he should be willing to give up at least $15 mil to upgrade his situation. If he's willing to take $10 mil less to sign with the Lakers, then that should be on his dime, not ours. As far as I'm concerned, letting him out of his contract for whatever amount any other team is willing to pay him is already going above and beyond doing right by him.

Yes his cap number will go down the next 2 seasons if he takes a buyout. If he gives back $10 mil then his cap number will go down $5m this season and $5m next season.
In that hypothetical situation, are you sure that the $10 mil has to be split evenly between the two remaining years on his contract? Or can we allocate the full $10 mil savings to 2022-23?

Well as of this morning it’s being reported that Love and his agent has backed out of buyout talks!
I say we just bench his ass. Make him do the usual team routines…..practice, film watching and walk through. Nothing strenuous as to aggravate his injury. And come game day just let him sit at the end of the bench and watch everybody else get minutes. I have been a huge Love supporter but I’m done with his ass….this proves he is all about the money and himself. So treat him accordingly.

It would be prorated over the remaining two years of his contract although it apparently doesn't matter since he's not willing to give anything back in a buyout per the above Woj tweet.

I'm personally getting the feeling he'd rather get the JR treatment and sit at home in his Manhattan penthouse while collecting every penny of that contract.

This is correct.

Love is who we thought he was.

I say we do exactly what you suggest - keep him away from the team and he can keep collecting those checks while he loses any chance to pad his career stats for any future HoF consideration.

I'm with you on this.

Love and the Cavs agreed to a multi-year guaranteed contract so it's Love's right to not agree to a buyout. It's also within the Cavs rights to push him to earn his salary by practicing, attending all required team events and then not playing him if he doesn't fit what they need.

If he's going to require the Cavs to fill their end of the contract the Cavs should require him to fulfill his end of it too and even fine him, etc. if he behaves badly or doesn't do what is contractually required of him.

It may get ugly but if Kevin and his agent are going to play hardball they better expect the same treatment in return. At some point I still think he gets bought out. It's a real shame it has come to this since at one point Kevin could have been the guy who stuck around and became a life-long face of the franchise even after his playing days were over.

I probably would too. He is washed at this point and he knows it and would get a league min contract, thus why should he give any back. 60 mill is a shit ton of money, and anyone that says they would give money back in his situation is just lying to themselves. All of those other buyouts were because the player could still get a MLE level contract or the final year of their contract AFTER the trade deadline.

I have said it before, and i will say it again.....Love will be bought out or cut in 1.5 years after the trade deadline, but not before.

I blame the SI cover curse.

I’m not surprised at all. I wouldn’t give up 60M either. He has clearly lost his passion for basketball a while ago. He cares more about modeling and his outside interests. He already has a ring so why take a pay cut just to go ring chasing and make the vet min. He’ll just get hurt again and sit out 40-60 games and continue to collect his checks.

I wonder about the loss of passion for bball. Why would he bother trying with the Olympic team?

I do think there are teams out there that would sign him for the vet min thinking he had something left in the tank but it would probably end the same way as his recent stint on the Olympic team...basically with him getting cut. He apparently has no interest at all in getting into basketball shape at this point. He has his ring so no reason to bother ring chasing either. He's living his best life with his model GF in Manhattan.

Hopefully the Cavs keep this is mind in the future. There are guys who love basketball and willing to do anything necessary to get in shape to play...then there are others such as Kevin Love who just use basketball as a way to a means.
