I’m not surprised at all. I wouldn’t give up 60M either. He has clearly lost his passion for basketball a while ago. He cares more about modeling and his outside interests. He already has a ring so why take a pay cut just to go ring chasing and make the vet min. He’ll just get hurt again and sit out 40-60 games and continue to collect his checks.

On the Cavs end, he could help guide Mobley to build out his game. If we figure he is just going to get hurt, we might as well wait it out a year until he is an expiring and finally get something for him. Buying him out isn't going to open up cap space. At least in a year he finally has a contract we can use in trades.

I wonder about the loss of passion for bball. Why would he bother trying with the Olympic team?
I don't believe he has an Olympic medal. Maybe he figured he could ride KD's coattails to a gold medal? Regardless he lied to them about being in shape and then basically got his ass cut.

Dude's a bad apple. I wouldn't let him anywhere near Mobley or the other kids on this roster. We already know we're a lottery team esp with our unicorn Mobley just turning 20. The last thing we need is a malcontent with a hotline to the Athletic writers who will print all his complaints for clicks.

He has a gold medal from the 2012 games.

OK @Alec Zander how do you see it? Can you give any examples of how Love has been a good teammate or vet leader these past few years?

@NMCav thanks for the info. TBH I wasn't following Love's career much until 2014 when he joined the Cavs.

No no, I despise him. The shit he pulled with Beilein lost my respect forever. In addition to everything else. I was just curious why he was joining the Olympic team if he doesn’t like basketball anymore. I’m guessing it was some sort of self-serving ego thing, no matter what he said.

I had to look it up myself. I was curious if he had ever played in the Olympics before.

Good, he can sell that gold medal to help make up for some of the money lost on a buy out.

(kidding, no way he does a buy out, lol)

Next year, Love is a big $30 million expiring. Not all is bad in this ordeal.

Part of me thinks he might like the situation on this team with all the young talent & maybe he thinks he can contribute.

The issue will be the luxury tax line. Extending Sexton puts us over the tax. I'd hope Dan Gilbert is willing to pay the penalty for at least one year for the betterment of this team.

Sexton and Garland both have said in interviews that Love has help them with their games. I think his game translates to helping Mobley more than anyone else because he has played the position.

I also think the struggles that Love has had with injuries could help with him with working with Mobley. At this point it's not like they would be competing with each other for playing time. Love could be much more willing to accept the mentor role now than he would have a year or two ago.

Maybe he could even help Markkanen too.

Huge expiring's are hard to match up with. Usually teams are trying to get rid of players like Love and those large of contracts are very difficult to match up...see Drummond last year.

Good question. He certainly did not want to have it end like it did. He must have been humiliated. They didn't invite him to be on the Olympic team. He asked them for a try out and it quickly became apparent he was way out of his league.

Maybe that will be a wake-up call. I don't think he wants to spend the next two years sitting on the end of the bench and going in for the last two minutes of lost causes with 3rd stringers and two-way guys. That would be humiliating. I have to believe he's working hard to bring his game to the level where he can contribute, even if it's just 12 minutes per game.

The Cavs could give him a choice - negotiate a buyout or get used to getting two minutes of garbage time with the guys on 10-day deals. Hopefully he'll show up as the same player who scored 30 against Boston last March.

Oh wow. No buyout after all. Well he's certainly going to have to up his production and be a better mentor than he's been in recent years, then, especially with the recent Olympic humiliation, as has been mentioned. Maybe there will be more motivation now that he has other bigs to mentor in Mobley and Markkanen. Even if he's only operating from an ego and pride perspective at this point, no one wants to be remembered as the guy who utterly sucked at the end of his career and ate up too much money. He's gotta do better than he's been lately or his modest argument for the HOF will be even less convincing.

I dont hate Kevin Love, but i see no point on him playing much unless we have injuries. We are a young building team. Allen, Lauri, Mobley, Sexton, Garland, Okoro, are all under 25 years old, only Rubio is over 25 that projects to get allot of minutes, and his mentor role should be invaluable. I would Love to become a mentor, but I dont know if he has it in him.

Love helped us win a title, and will always Love him for that. Its not my 60 million, so he can be our giant 60 million dollar victory cigar and get in at the end of blow outs, it really doesnt bother me. I dont think he is a distraction, his heart isnt in it, but its not like he is throwing any shade or soup at anyone.
