So Becky from HR should have stopped Paul Silas from starting LeBron because he was too young, inexperienced and unproven to be given a starter’s responsibilities?
LeBron's talent was so other-worldly that I suspect he showed himself to be the Cavaliers best player in very short order. That begs the question, are you comparing Mobley's talent to LeBron's?!? If so, you need to slow your roll...

I'm not saying Markkanen is some huge talent, but LeBron walked through the door and the all-world talent in his way to a starting spot were guys like Rickey Davis, Darius Miles, Smush Parker and DaJuan Wagner. James' hoops IQ walking through the door as a 19 year old rookie was already encyclopedic compared to the guided-notes of basic understanding of the concept of basketball offered by those guys.

I agree. Markkanen, himself, is a former #7 overall pick. If I had to guess, right now, Markkanen is a better player than Mobley and, if that’s the case, he should start. That doesn’t mean Mobley won’t be the better player, but he has work to do, both in the weight room & on the court.

This is no different than the Chiefs not starting Patrick Mahomes his rookie season and having him watch Alex Smith. The NBA is different in that more than one guy will play at a particular position over the course of a game. Mobley will get his minutes. He shouldn’t start until he proves himself better than Markkanen.

All of Sexton, Garland, and Okoro would've benefitted from coming off the bench their rookie years IMO. If you look around the league, the historically well-run organizations rarely start their rookies, even the ones they draft in lottery.

So you're saying it is a slam dunk that Mobley will start every game this season then?

Better question. Which rookie actually had competition? But I tend to agree with you. If we started Sexton, Garland, Okoro 3 seasons in a row. How are we going to tell the player we hope becomes our franchise centerpiece to come off the bench.
Danny Ferry did!!!! ;)

Starting Lauri also makes the lineup fit better. Can't have too many non-shooters in the lineup.

This.
Earn the minutes.
It also helps if your vets aren't openly tanking/pouting. It's a shame that George Hill, Korvor & JR didn't take a professional approach Sexton's rookie year, but it's also a shame that the organization demanded he get minutes right away. Same with Garland, I'd say the same about Okoro, but by that point the ship had sailed and you needed someone, anyone to put in the effort on defense at the 3 you kind of had to go with it.
Even if the bar is somewhat low, having a vet in the way should make guys realize what they need to work on and help shed some of their bad habits.

If the plan is to have Mobley eventually be a starter and Markkanen come off the bench, I think for this organization it's best that it just starts that way. Koby hasn't been good at smoothing things over and if Markkanen is playing well but get demoted, it might not going over well.

It would be nice for Mobley to earn it but I think the chances of it becoming a locker room issue is far higher if Markkanen starts and Mobley comes off the bench. Markkanen could play well off the bench and settle into that role while both him and Mobley play well together. It would be less of a competition between the two and more about figuring team chemistry.

Is this guy playing like a guy that has any intention on playing 30+ minutes a night in the paint?

No, he's moving like a more fluid KD out there
He's looking more like a SF just work on the 3. Moves really well but could get abused by some PFers and centers. In addition, don't want him to get hurt when his body is not ready to play night after night against fully developed (body wise) centers and some PFers.

The thing is what if Lauri is very good for the Cavs? People keep saying to eventually move him but the bench but if he becomes a star and somehow ignite the fire that once was during his rookie year when people thought he was the next Dirk. Then what?..

That's why the Cavs need to start Mobley at the 3.
