2021 Game #1 | #4 Ohio State @ Minnesota | September 2nd, 2021 @ 8:00 PM EST

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Defense is suspect, like we thought

Oline and WR/RB/TE are amazing, like we thought.

If this is what CJ Stroud is, this is a 9-3 team. If this is just a bad game, then it's business as usual.

The defense was…. Rough. We were missing our top 2 corners and our starting center. They won a road game in the rain with more than half the defense as new starters and a freshman starting quarterback

Stroud wasn’t great but if 294 and 4 TDs is a bad game then they’re going much better than 9-3

Stroud just has to do what he did in the second half and that’s get the ball to this talent in space and let them work. 5 huge yardage TDs today.

He threw for 294, but he never faced a tough throw. A good chunk of yards were screens. And he had guys WIDE open downfield. He hit some of them, but missed a couple of open throws. He left a good chunk of yardage on the field.

Eventually, we'll face teams that can cover way better than Minny did tonight. If Stroud is as inaccurate as he was tonight against a good defense, it'll be ugly.

But do you actually think he will be? I don’t. Kid has talent. First start let alone first pass thrown, on the road, good defense, crappy weather. Still managed to make the passes when they mattered and end up with a nice stat line. I think he’ll only improve.

I have no idea how good he is. I’ve seen one game of his, and he wasn’t very good.

Id this is his worst game of his career, which considering he’s never thrown a pass before it may be, then we’ll be fine. But if this is who he is, then we have some issues.

Yea Master Teague should get used to riding the bench with the way Miyan and Henderson have looked
Yeah, I kinda feel bad for Teague. But he should not see the field at this point barring injury.

Stroud needs to be much better. And I think he will be...in time.

Don't have much hope for the defense, though.

Next week is going to be rough. Not feeling great about it.

Defense was on the field a ton.

Some of that was their own fault. Some of that was drives extended by suspect penalties. Some of that was a Ohio State defensive touchdown. Some was because Ohio State scored 35 points in only 9:34 minutes of second half possession, which includes the run out the clock final drive. It also seemed like on defense this game was almost a final extension of training camp where they subbed/rotated so much to get the info to make some calls on who should be the key guys

Minnesota ran 75 plays. Ohio State 48.

So, I think if next game we see the following, there is hope that they can be better than presumed after tonights game:

-More balanced time of possession
-A more balanced offensive attack from Oregon
-A return of both Banks and Brown
-Tightening up the LB rotation to feature Simon, Mitchell, and either Eichenberg/Hickman
-First game jitters out of the way for so many true freshman, redshirt freshman, and first time starter/rotation guys

But, I also don't have great faith in Kerry Coombs as a DC and am concerned that Proctor will miss the game, so I could certainly see it being a stressful defensive performance against Oregon as well.

next week should be… interesting.

Bad game?

Lol. The absurdity of OSU fan expectations is something else, sometimes.
I mean, given the QB success and team success, yes expectations are absurdly high at OSU.

Stroud ended up with nice counting numbers, but I don’t know if he had one tough completion all game. And he missed some open throws. You can’t honestly tell me you think he threw the ball better than mediocre last night.

I don’t do the couch criticism after you walk into Minneapolis in your first career start and:

1. Put points on the board.
2. Get the ball to your playmakers
3. Win

You don’t have “high expectations,” you have unreasonable expectations, which as you said yourself are predicated on more experienced QBs, team success and what they’ve done.

To call that performance “bad” is a joke, IMO. Completely unreasonable for a 19 year old starting his career in a hostile B1G environment, on the road at night.

That’s a deep October/November game with incredibly high energy, not some cupcake.

And I don’t think Stroud had to do too much to accomplish any of that. I think you’re giving him to much credit for the way people around him played. He was able to hit guys who were extremely wide open and was given a ton of time to throw. He had a couple really bad throws and I don’t know if he had one throw that was really tough.

Essentially a rookie QB in his very first start. The time to get worried is if/when we don't see any improvement after a few games.
