Cleveland Browns 2021 Regular Season: RIP

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Dorsey had a hand in shaping this organization from an absolute dumpster fire to a semblance of competence. His contribution shouldn't be forgotten.

It also shouldn't be forgotten that he's not here any more because he cared more about gaining power within the organization than doing what was best for the team or protecting his franchise quarterback.

Malik McDowell is also an Exclusive Rights free agent this off-season. He accrued less than two years of experience with the Seahawks.

That's great leverage for a contract negotiation because he can't negotiate with another team yet! Gift that keeps on giving!

He is probably just thrilled to be back in the league and getting paid again. He worked his ass off to get back.

And yet, in another year or two if this keeps up.......Berry will have this organization by the balls, ie if he says he wants to renegotiate his contract, the Haslams have to listen and pay him more, lol.

You want to gain power, show competience and make yourself indispensable....Berry has for sure done that so far, lol

The difference between Dorsey and Berry is that Berry actually seems to value the input of other people. He's brought in a couple of former GMs primarily to pick their brains, he embraces working with the analytics side, and Stefanski certainly has a voice as well. He recognizes that the best teams work as an actual team, not a dictatorship. He gets the final call, but if you have good ideas, he's willing to listen.

Dorsey was the guy who tossed a binder full of analytic data in the trash the second DePodesta left the room. Dorsey seems like the type who always thinks he's the smartest person in the room. When he's right, it works out really well (Chubb, Baker, Ward), but when he's not it can be disastrous (Kitchens, most of his picks other than the three I listed above).

Oh Berry is a team player, he has been as close to perfect as you can be, only one mistake i can see so far. My only point was that doing it the right way and being very good at your job is actually how you gain power, not what dorsey tried to do.

I gave it some additional thought:

My issue is partially with the idea that the hype video is any indication of his upcoming performance. Hype videos in general are dumb, though I understand their purpose and their money-making capabilities.

FTR I think the video was well-produced and if Odell was putting up Myles Garrett or Nick Chubb quality, healthy performances I’d be more impressed. I think LeBron did them, pretty sure Kyrie did, Curry etc. No issue there. Healthy players who have proven it consistently. Even Myles trainer was posting videos of his insane jumps. Less hype videos than documenting his athletic performance.

Perform and then give me a hype video. That’d be a nice trend for guys who haven’t been healthy and played below expectation.
Are you gonna post an OBJ get off my lawn video as a response? ;)

The biggest mistake for Dorsey running the Browns was the way he would play favorites and pick "his guys" at all costs. We got rid of talented young guys like Ogbah, Nassib, etc in favor of marginal NFL players that he had ties to, he let Wolf pick Takitaki (decent player but nowhere near the ceiling to deserve a 2nd round pick) and Highsmith pick a yearly Miami bust... You're not maximizing talent when you're so limited by personal ties. One thing I love about Berry is that he seems to keep an open mind with everyone and appreciates the discourse with the guys under him.

Dorsey hit on the Landry trade, but the OBJ trade has at best been a mixed bag. Is OBJ going to be more valuable than Dexter Lawrence and Peppers this season? I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. Traded up for Callaway? Big wiff. And the fact that Dorsey drafted Corbett ahead of Chubb is a big question mark on what was going on in the player evaluation room.

After two weeks, the Browns are the number one offense in Football Outsider’s DVOA metric.

Pretty sure the Browns have the best mix of talent and play calling in the NFL.
