Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I would like to see you run that take past his team-mates and see how it flies. That would likely end up with you eating that take.

Maybe. I do know that Baker has never been anointed the leader of this team. If anybody it's been Jarvis Landry, Myles Garrett, and Joel Bitonio. Baker is more of a frontrunner than a leader and it shows. There are multiple times during his tenure here where you can point out bad leadership. Yesterday was another ding.

Two different sports and two different situations.

The point is that you hold different players to different standards based on your preconceived opinions on them. If Baker sulked on the sidelines when another player scored like Odell did, you’d kill him for it. When Odell does it, not a peep from Los because you’ve decided Odell is good and nothing he does on the field will convince you otherwise. Meanwhile, you’ve decided Baker sucks, so you’ll over analyze every little thing he does and use it against him.

That's not true. Odell didn't do what Baker did yesterday. I don't recall Odell having a bad game and skipping out on the media obligations and calling out the fans.

Another thing I would like to point out is when Jarvis scored baker was full of energy sprinting over to celebrate. Then when he was playing poorly he was too hurt to address the media? His whole excuse today for not addressing the media was he was too frustrated and didn't want to say anything that he would regret saying. In other words, he's admitting that he crumbled under pressure. On top of that he threw the fans under the bus. Of all people he chose to attack the fans. he didn't mention the opposing team. Didn't give DET credit for playing hard and give the usual company lines. Nope. He decided that he was just being so hard on himself and it was us the fans who were out of line.

Crowd noise or play calling. I forget which one.

I'm not here to get in between you and @Los216 but starting NFL QBs *absolutely* should be held to different standards than WRs or anyone else in sports. It's the single most important, and highest paid, position in team sports. They're the widely accepted leader of the largest rosters in professional sports. I need my QB to be better and above the shit everyone else does.

He's a frontrunner though so you're only gonna get what you're looking for some of the time.

*I* have only been a fan of Baker for a total of 1 season (his rookie year and the last half of last year) of his almost 4 years in the League. Much of what he does, in good times and bad, comes off as very douchey and performative to me. Always has. I do watch the sideline, practice, etc interactions between him and teammates. It'll seem like I'm piling on, but I get the sense many of his teammates "like" the position more than the person.

With regards to Baker and boos, I'll never forget being at the Ravens game when Baker flipped off fans for booing him. I was at the game and sat behind the Browns bench at about the 45yd line. It was the game Odell took off his cleats early. He was getting ragged on and booing. A few folks talked trash to Baker and his response was to curse them out. He's been booed before by Browns fans.

That's why QB's get asked to take the podium after a sucky game but WR's don't get asked to take the podium after a sucky game.

My gut feeling is that when this is all said and done, the most likely outcome in 2 years, people look back and end up thinking that that both Baker and Odell had seen their best days in the NFL by the time they split. I could be completely wrong, but I need Baker to get out there and remind me why he's supposed to be a starting QB.

2 weak games in a row & 3 out of the last 4. Not going to make the playoffs if that keeps up.

Barring a trade for Rodgers or Wilson, though, I'd imagine Baker is going to get one more year to prove whether or not he belongs as a starting QB.

Wasn't this supposed to be the year to determine that?

He didn't throw the entire fanbase under the bus, just the ones that were booing him. A lot of us are frustrated with Baker, but I don't blame him one bit for calling out those fans. They have a right to boo him if they aren't happy with his performance, but he has a right to fire back at them if he is the one putting his health at risk for their entertainment.

It would have been nice, but the injuries have made it difficult to properly evaluate his season, and so the team will likely have him play on his fifth year option and he'll get one more prove it year. This isn't rocket science. We've got him under contract for one more year and, unless we can make a move for a clear upgrade without mortgaging our future (after all, what's the point of trading away the farm for a star QB only to be unable to surround him with adequate pieces because we traded away three years worth of firsts?), Baker will be our starting QB next year.

I was one of those arguing that it doesn’t make sense to boo your own player if they are giving the effort but not playing well.

Baker’s comment today - NOT in the “heat of battle” but after he’s had time to consider how to address this - is completely indefensible and, unfortunately, justifies any boos he gets from the fans. An NFL QB can’t come off like a bitch. This is just pathetic.

He did much better earlier this year when he said he had a “piss-poor performance.” He needs to either acknowledge that his play needs to get better or just shut up. Feuding with the fans is childish and is not a good look.

1st round picks are not the only way to improve the team. Chubb, Hunt, Landry were all outside of 1st round.
