Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
For as annoying and bad Baker has been this year, his 5th year option is super cheap and almost impossible to find a starting QB at the same price. So, again, barring a big trade, he's here and likely a starter. Maybe some camp competition, but ultimately looking at the FA options, it's Baker.

Another very underrated element that Russell Wilson would bring to this team is unquestioned leadership. That feeling of knowing that you have a guy that everybody is going to follow no matter what is extremely hard to find.
Isn't this the guy who threw his offensive line under the bus on the Dan Patrick Show in the offseason?

eh? How Baker plays is more important than whether or not we make the playoffs???

Oh HELL no.

Yes, it really is this year.

The most important aspect of this season was getting a long term answer on our QB.

If we get both, great. But I am absolutely choosing Baker confirming last season wasn’t a flash in the pan over eeking in to the playoffs with him continuing to play like ass.

I agree with you.

Whatever the amount is the Browns would be willing to extend Mayfield at, he won't be willing to sign for.

Whatever amount Baker would be willing to sign for, the Browns won't be offering.

Baker's personality is such that he loves nothing more than to say fuck you to those who doubted him. He lives for that.

So, I wouldn't be surprised to see that even if he blew up in the playoffs, took us deep, and was offered a significant extension, he still wouldn't take it. My guess is that we'll be looking for a quarterback no matter what in a little more than a year.

There's only two realistic outcomes IMO.

1. Baker Mayfield is starting for the Browns on his 5th year option in 2022 without a contract extension.

2. The Browns acquire a veteran QB via trade and subsequently trade Mayfield away.

Nothing else makes a whole lot of sense. It's a weak quarterback draft class and free agent crop.

Defenses, of course, have done a terrific job of keeping Mayfield in the pocket this season and eliminating the bootlegs. I wrote a few weeks ago how Mayfield led the league in passing yards when rolling to his left last season. That’s gone now. I spoke to one assistant coach this week who already played the Browns this season. He told me their game plan defensively was, “Keep Baker in the pocket because he can’t see from there.” It’s exactly what we thought all along just confirmed.
The injuries add another layer to all of this. Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said this week the Browns can’t move Mayfield around as much now because he’s so banged up. Part of it might be his own doing. That same assistant coach told me they knew they could get to Mayfield because he holds the ball longer than most quarterbacks.

Not sure $18Mil is "super cheap". How about middle of the road?

I guess you want to factor in backup QBs for some reason?

He's near the bottom of the starting QB list and the guys below him are still on their rookie contracts or vets giving back money to extend a SB window.

I mean the other option is Baker absolutely balls out the rest of the year, and that’s enough for both the Browns and Baker to agree to an extension.

But then I saw you said “realistic” :chuckle:

He's set to be the 16th highest paid QB next year at $18.85 Mil. What do you think his salary is next year?

Oh, this is fun.

FWIW, it really is annoying for QBs to try to get out plays, audibles, blocking adjustments, etc… when the fans are being too loud before the ball is snapped.

Peyton Manning would RIP Colts and Broncos fans for doing that. He has complained on the MNF Manning broadcast several times already.

Baker needs to react better for sure, but just thought I’d drop that nugget in as well.

Correct.

I’m sure his team loved him blowing off the team because he played like shit and the fans were loud. Sure that went over well.
Ok I'll bite. How did he blow off the team? If you want to accuse him of blowing off the fans and media then fine. He's always been one to obsessively care most about his teammates and inner circle while having no problem telling anyone outside of the circle of people he cares about to suck on his nuts if the rest of us don't like it. He's always been an us against the world kind of guy. What makes anyone believe that he's blowing off his team?

Side note...was everyone else aware that the Browns don’t actually have a QB coach on the coaching staff? AVP pulls double duty on being OC and the de facto QB coach.

That send kinda insane to me? I don’t know how receptive Baker would be, but I feel like he could use one.
