MLB off-season news: non lockout

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don’t expect Bimbo can/will comment on Matt Dolan’s primary election campaign for U.S. Senate but I wonder how much of his campaign financing is coming from the family’s personal wealth? Has the campaign in any way limited spending by the Dolan family on the Guardians? I’m not suggesting this explains the post lockout paucity of spending by the Guardians but does make me wonder.

it's political.. so.. maybe you don't want to know?..
political, yes, but politics often intersects with professional sports like it or not.

Forbes valuations of mlb teams has Guardians #24.

Justin Upton was just DFA'd by the Angels and will be owed $28M this year. Crazy that he is still only 34 after being in the league so long.

If/when he clears waivers... Any interest? Probably not.

Probably not. He’s dealt with injuries, but he hasn’t had a +RC over 92 since 2018, is a bad outfielder, and is 34 so probably unlikely to rebound or stay healthy. I’d rather see Kwan or Naylor. If Naylor was going to be out for most of the season then I could have been talked into trying Upton in LF.

Agree with this. he is a righty, so I immediately thought we could use one of those.

Good buy low guy for a basement team to try to flip at the deadline though.

We would only offer him a minor league deal with incentives, nothing more...

Offering Upton a minor league deal makes even less sense than a MLB one. A cheap Upton is probably a good lotto ticket for some teams. Maybe the As, Rockies.. The Reds amongst others. Nice low risk high reward, but not really a fit for us. If he ended up on the team in place of Zimmer or maybe even Mercado... I won't care, the bar is already pretty low.

Odds are wherever he ends up, it makes no difference. However he could end up doing well enough in a place like Colorado to get flipped at the deadline... Excellent lotto ticket for the right team.

That is a good point. It’s not like we have extra room on the 40 to even offer a MLB contract. You could cut Zimmer, but we will likely need that roster flexibility anyways.

Upton hasn't been good, I am not willing to give him more than a minor league deal with a mid season opt out with incentives if he makes the club...
