Ricky Rubio - Take the Money and Limp

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's a good contract. Intangibles and hopefully plenty of tangibles when he gets back on the court.

Vet leadership secured.

I think the guys want to run it back, and they deserve to get an opportunity to do that.

Feel like they re-sign Sexton, and Levert is used at the deadline.

I'm curious why you get this impression? I'm not disagreeing - but I would think of a Rubio resigning as a step towards not having Sexton be a major piece.

I don't think it is a big difference either way "We like Rubio, so we resigned him" doesn't have to do much with Sexton at all.

But I sort of expect that Okoro will start at SG to start the season (maybe LeVert), and Sexton will play minutes alongside Rubio (when he is healthy) and will have backup PG duties as well.
Sure. My rationale was that Sexton would’ve been perfect to take on Rubio’s role last year of being our sixth man and “third guard”, assuming they kept the starting lineup that finished last season the same (Garland, LeVert, Markkanen, Mobley, Allen).

Re-signing Rubio, in my eyes, made it likely that if Sexton were to return, he’d resume his role as the starting shooting guard alongside Garland since Rubio is going to command the second unit. At that point, you have three players fighting for minutes at the 2 (LeVert, Agbaji, Okoro) while also getting some time on the wing. It’d likely make sense to move LeVert or Okoro for a bigger wing in that case, though that’s just my opinion.

However, I can also see why you think this would push Sexton out. That would make more room for the players who are actually on the roster at the moment.

With Brunson signing with the Knicks, it might make a Sexton S&T with the Mavs possible.
Mavs have a couple of players that could fit in here with C Dwight Powell and SF Reggie Bullock.

No way I do that without getting DFS

Don’t see the need to dump Cedi for the Cedi whisperer. I’m all for dumping Windler tho, he just seems a lost cause at this point and we could add a Martin twin as a replacement

Low risk with potential huge reward. I know we will want him back ASAP, but he really should take his time. We need him longer term than just some games in January/February.

I'm asking this genuinely, with no ulterior motive, baiting or challenge.

Does *anything* (Cavaliers basketball-related) make you happy?
Just recently I liked the Agbaji pick a lot (and said as much). I'm just not a fan of this move, for the reasons I already laid out. Obviously I don't hate it, and I can see why people like it... Rubio became something of a symbol of unexpected success for these Cavs last season.

But I thought we could have found a younger backup PG who could shoot a bit. I've followed Rubio's career since he was a teen and always liked his quirky game, but at this point, he's well and truly damaged goods. We're not getting him to "mentor" anyone or to be a practice body or to act as a behind-the-scenes leader / father figure. When Rubio is on your team, he plays. And last season, he played a ton of minutes and had a green light like never before. I wasn't crazy about the results. He took way too many early shots at bad percentages and couldn't finish at the basket at all. That too has a price.

Anyway – whenever we add shooting and play modern basketball with a lot of movement and unselfishness, I'm generally happy. Rubio coming back may again lead to to a situation where we have three non-shooters out there at the same time, and that just doesn't work in this NBA.

Appreciate all the counter points! As always, I may be totally wrong about everything. Let's hope I am in this case.

They probably could if they used the full MLE but they were risking not having enough money for Sexton and messing up the team chemistry by signing a guy that really wants to be a starting PG but took the money instead.

Third year on Ricky's contract is only partially guaranteed, which offsets some of the risk and they should probably be able to keep Collin too who still has a chance at being that young backup PG that can shoot.
