Who cares about the tax? Gilbert doesn’t give a shit. We’re gonna be over the cap no matter what.
Tax is a big deal. You also want to push being a repeater out as long as you can.

I can’t figure out why people are pushing the Cavs to sign Collin Sexton for over $15 million/year. The market has spoken and $15M seems high. Why negotiate against yourself?

I don't think hitting the luxury tax is a concern for the front office because I think they will happily give up on Cedi or Windler to avoid it to resign Sexton. At this point we know what kind of player Cedi is. I think it's a pretty low chance that Windler can stay healthy and make a jump for the team to want to keep him past this year.

I think they care about the repeater tax. If they stay out this year, they are likely out of it next year and the tax will not escalate as quickly. Important as they look to sign Mobley, etc and build a team for the long term.

I think they would go into it if it's worth it but Sexton may not be worth it to them.

Besides, not sure anyone is willing to pay more than $15M - at least no one that has the space to make the offer. S&T offers rely completely on the Cavs being interested in what is coming back to them. Because Sexton is restricted and has not had an offer sheet, the Cavs don't have to make a deal for the bare minimum, etc.

I expect that they will not want to take long term salary back for Sexton unless it is a player worth their while and they probably would want at least a first rounder back with some protections.

Seems about right to me. But that hasn't happened yet, so I have to guess that Sexton's camp is still looking for a payday over $17Mil.

So basically, a team could give Sexton a S&T contract starting at $20mil if the Cavs take back a $15Mil contract and send Osman or Windler with a decent second round pick to a 3rd team with cap space.

What would the Cavs want in return? 3&D? Backup PG? Versatile wing? Dead salary with some sweet draft picks?

Honestly Dallas is a tough fit. I think the only guy the Cavs would want that fills a need is DFS, and I don’t believe the Mavs would trade him for Sexton.

Isn’t he a PF?? We have our PF (Mobley) don’t we?

He is a SF/PF and he has been an elite shooter the last 2 seasons. Solid defender. Oddly he's a poor rebounder and isn't someone who will create for himself or others.

I don't think people are taking into account how little they value Cedi and Windler or the assets that would be necessary to move them to not go into the luxury tax. They have over 4 million in cash consideration and just bought the #49 pick for 1.7 million. They can use not so good future 2nd round picks to move them and always replace the picks at draft time. They can also pay for all of Windler's salary for the whole year and give another team a free flyer on Windler.

I wouldn't be surprised if they already have trades lined up for Cedi and Windler. They will just execute one or both when they have the contract number for Sexton agreed upon.

Agreed. I would want DFS (already 29) and a future lottery protected 1st.

Honestly though, Sexton would be great for Dallas. Just a great fit. He’d be guarding ones there and just asked to be aggressive scoring with Luka being primary facilitator. He would probably get 22+ppg in Dallas.

After adding Christian Wood, spacing would be great as well for Sexton to do what he does best inside the arc.

Doncic's situation in Dallas almost mirrors Lebron's first tenure in Cleveland. Capped out team, lack of FRP's, overpaid roleplayers. It says something about Doncic that he's able to carry that team in the playoffs. Some of the supposed superstars such as KD couldn't do it.

^^Tim Larson is a fake source BTW.

Part of being too good too quick, kind of due to the stupid way the nba is set up. You need to draft your superstar and then suck a year or two longer to pick up a couple more high lottery picks. If you draft a generational talent who makes you competitive straight away you miss out in the long term
