Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah, it’s pretty much guys being dudes.
Have you ever been in a sports locker room? The smell of unwashed jockstraps permeating in the air? The sting of having your bare ass slapped by a burly athlete? There's nothing quite like it. Just men being men.

I just don't get the vitriol directed at the guy. It's kind of weird.

Especially from actual fans of the Browns. Internet culture is kind of weird.

I have nothing bad to say about the guy. There were times he looked like a top 5 QB and there were times he looked like a bottom 5 QB - the reality is somewhere in the middle. I know I've enjoyed watching the browns more the last four years than the 16 before that. Baker was one of the reasons.

Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer said quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold will battle for the starting job... It's an open competition. … It’s a very healthy situation,” Fitterer said in a Tuesday news conference.

Scott and I will agree to disagree.

I was at his debut vs. the Jets. (And Ike Crowell who pantomimed pooping on the football)

Is it a Cleveland thing, or do athletes always hold a grudge against the team that drafted them? Remember CTE nutburger/rapist Kellen Winslow prancing around with the Bucs? Doe the Patriots or Bears get this kind of ball-busting?

I fully expect to get some kind of shit from Baker, but I seriously like the dude anyway.

Every organized team sport or activity I’ve done, from soccer to baseball to intramural kickball to competitive gaming, has had guys joking and talking shit to each other. I don’t think what Baker said means anything.

Yeah, but you weren’t playing in a professional league that is loaded with prima-donnas, especially at skill positions. Most pro athletes that’ve busted their ass to get into the league aren’t going to take kindly to that type of shit when they’re just trying to win games and get to their next contract, especially if it’s coming from a guy who’s not handling his business. If it’s coming from Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Mahomes, etc, that’s a totally different story.

Everything we’ve heard over the last 8 months or so points to Baker not being well-liked nearly throughout the organization and I’d venture to guess this is one of the contributing factors, outside of his performance on the field.

From what I've seen, it seems like guys are fine with Baker as a person but just don't like playing with him. No one seems to hate the guy off the field. Hell, even OBJ was friends with him outside of the locker room.

And if you don't think that NFL players talk shit to each other in practice, I don't know what to tell you. They do. A lot. All the time.

I work with NFL players and have been around a lot of them. I know they talk shit to each other in practice. They take it from guys they respect. They clown guys they don’t. If they didn’t like playing with Baker, they probably didn’t appreciate shit talking/joking from a guy they didn’t respect that wasn’t handling his own business. If you’re just talking shit and not backing it up on the field, it gets old real fast, especially in a league where millions of dollars are on the line.

I liked Mayfield and hoped he could swagger the team into some deep playoff runs, but last year, Baker wasn't fixing things.

I won't assume to know why the offense was failing last year, and I'm not even going to try to list them. I'll just say things stank so I'm glad the front office isn't rolling out the same guys again.

Baker said "We're gon' put the skittahs in your allan wickahs you plonker!!" but last season it sure seemed like he was "all fur-coat and no trousers".

Carolina Panthers

Camp prediction: Baker Mayfield won't be the starting quarterback, at least initially. This might come as a shock to the 91.6% on my informal Twitter poll who predicted Mayfield would be the Week 1 starter. But Sam Darnold has an entire offseason learning Ben McAdoo's system and the terminology to his advantage. Darnold is also healthy while Mayfield is about six months removed from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He's on track to a full recovery, but that's still an obstacle to overcome. Darnold has nothing to lose for the first time in his NFL career, so he has less pressure than the top pick of the 2018 draft.

Fb is hilarious. The threads coming up defending how good baker is, and how bad the browns organization is for getting rid of the guy "who lead us to our first post season" are everywhere and awful.
