So, 4-1/2 days to the trade deadline... Other than a 1B/DH bat, I think that the Guard will not do anything. Yet, even then, they would need to make a 26-man roster move which means both Jones and Oscar (maybe Miller) get sent down.
I think the Guardians are stuck in neutral, not knowing if they want to go forward or in reverse.
Reasons to Sell
-- Saw a tweet that the market right now has many buyers and sellers are holding out for a return like Seattle giving up 2 top-100 prospects. Imagine if they got that for Bieber (they would target 3 for him) or Rosario (even one for him which would seem fair for a top 10 WAR SS).
-- Just as people think we would be buyers to clean up for 40-man roster slots, there are players who do not fit our organization long-term: Rosario (it's him or Bieber to fit into long-term payroll space), Reyes and Plesac that can get very interesting prospects at A level to avoid 40 man spots (well Reyes won't get you much)
-- We are in 17th spots to win this year's WS according to 3 of the top gambling sites. Even if we win the division, it's hard to believe we have enough fire power to make anything happen
-- There is a need for pitching out in the market (Phili is even looking at Plesac) and the relief market isn't any better.
-- Guard has been extremely lucky that they have had no major injuries to their main players (just Civale, Morris, Vargas, Oscar, ...), luck usually evens out over a full season.
Reasons to Buy
-- We are 1-1.5 games out of division and WC
-- We have a ton of prospects
-- You don't want to disrupt the clubhouse culture by doing a fire-sale so buy a rental to keep people happy
-- The cost of a rental should come down where it would even make the fans on this site happy to see that they did something
Reasons that they do nothing
-- The market has a huge iceberg in the way called Soto (where the dam needs to burst first as some clubs are holding onto prospects needed for that deal before moving on)
-- It is only 4 days away and they keep on winning against teams that they should be losing to out of luck of facing some when they are down like Tampa -- It usually takes 4 days for them to analyze 1 trade let alone multiple trades.
-- There are signs to buy due to record in a seller's market and that is the exact opposite of their style (want to win trades)
-- They can aways sell Rosario/Plesac in the winter (like they did with Lindor/Cookie) and still get a reasonable deal .. maybe more for Reyes if he can right the ship. And, the same is true for prospects to clear up 40 man spaces
-- They cannot buy hitters if they want to see more from Nolan Oscar and Benson to clear those 40 man spaces come offseason.
-- Edit: We are not going to do much in playoffs because 2/5th of our pitching staff will be hitting innings limit come mid-Sept (McK and Quant)
