These arguments are as good as coaching arguments. The only difference is we only have to wait 20 more hours to get a definite answer, so get your arguments in, there's not much time left!!

Here's a part that stands out to me--

Although Mr. Watson did not play during the 2021 season, the Commissioner declined to put him on administrative leave under which any games missed would be credited against any suspension later imposed
If this was all so egregious and heinous to the NFL, why didn't they put Watson under administrative leave last year? Seems odd that they would come back and insist on a longer punishment now when they could have placed him administrative leave a year ago. Then they could easily call it 23+ game suspension and this would be over by now.
Why would you expect the NFL to unilaterally take action when they didn't have to?

Watson said he was done playing for the Texans. The Texans weren't going to play him. Issue sorted--no need for the league to rush to judgment and get involved.

I've been repeating this the whole time and the excuses people are making to defend the NFL on this are weak. Judge Robinson has basically said the same thing.

Would Watson have agreed to the suspension? And agreed to not be paid? I don’t think you can put that one on the NFL.

To show that they really care about the situation which they obviously did not.

Great thread right now!

I don't think the NFL will appeal for a variety of reasons (the NFL fearing their "dirty laundry" getting out is not one of them), but I must say it feels like there's a lot of wishful thinking going on in this thread.

I have a suspicion that most people would not be stumping this hard for Watson and the NFLPA going after the owners had a team not named the Browns been the one that traded for Watson :chuckle:
I would have a pitch fork right now had Watson been traded to a AFC team . The hypocrisy in being a fan of the Browns is all over my face right now :chuncky:

But as I have always said I am fine with the punishment for Watson as long as it is fair - sticking with my initial guess of 12 games and an actual fine...

They still can't apply that new precedent to Deshaun Watson without prior notice.
Yes. Yes they can. They can enforce any suspension they want if the NFL appeals and it goes to Goodell.

Basically if the NFL wants to set a new precedent it will have to apply to the next guy and not the one who they did not give prior notice to which would be Deshaun Watson.
No.

There is nothing in the CBA requiring “prior notice” for the NFL to levy a specific suspension length. This is kind of a ridiculous assertion..like they have to come up with a list of absolutely creepy and disgusting things that a player may do and dole out prior notice of potential suspension length for each act.

League memo: All players please be advised that wearing a buttplug to your massage and taking your towel off will now result in a 10 game suspension. Please leave all butt plugs at home or keep them in your locker.

The benefit? Robinson is basing Watsons suspension on prior precedent. The NFL is basically setting a new one, for a player who has done something no other player has really been accused of. So the next time a player decides to sexually assault/expose his genitals to between 20-26 women, and be completely unrepentant while sticking to his contention he did absolutely nothing wrong, the NFL won't be stuck seeing that sociopath being given only 6 games.

But the NFL can create a new precedent without appealing the suspension too, right?

As far as I know, there's nothing really stopping the NFL from waiting a little bit and simply announcing (after coming to an agreement with the NFLPA of course) that "moving forward any violation of the Personal Conduct Policy that involves non-violent sexual related allegations will be a minimum of a X game suspension with the possibility of more based on the severity of the allegations"

He doesn't have to agree with it. Rodger Goodell has final say.

Sure, but they could have ended up doing this exact same process.

I think the reality is, the NFL was in a fact finding process. They wanted to know exactly what they were dealing with and that took time. The Texans and Watson both agreed that he wasn’t going to take the field…so the NFL had absolutely no impotus to act prematurely.

That would have been letting Watson off easy. He doesn’t just get to self impose and serve a suspension when he doesn’t plan on playing anyway. That’s barely a punishment at all.

Watson doesn’t deserve shit for last year. He brought it all on himself and doesn’t get to slink out of actual consequences because he sat out during a time he wasn’t planning on playing anyway.

People need to understand that the NFL is absolutely unequivocally not bound by Judge Robinson's thoughts that they need to have established precedent on suspension length before they can levy an unprecedented suspension.

That's simply her recommendation as an independent arbiter who was jointly hired by the NFL and NFLPA. Nothing more than that.
