Some of these “feuds” just aren’t feuds to me. AEW does this a lot where they call something a feud after MINIMAL interaction and a lot of the feuds just make no sense.
I really can’t think of any examples of this. Could you provide some?
AEW definitely has some smaller midcard feuds, but I consider that a good things and something that WWE is sorely lacking.
The Luchadaurus Jungle Boy stuff was rushed and they start stopped it one time before actually pulling the trigger again. And to my knowledge there still isn’t a good reason why LS turned on Jungle Boy. They wanted to break them up for no reason. They lost the titles but it’s not like the way they lost stoked any intrigue at all. There was no story. They lost to Lee and Swerve and boom, no LS is mad and leaves his best friend for Christian. Has there been more story given to make this make sense? I honestly have missed the last 2 weeks so idk. There is no story in “we lost, so now I’m with Christian.” Was Jungle Boy eating all the pins, which made LS think he’s better than him? Like WHY is LS so against Jungle Boy now. It can’t just be because they lost.
They built to that break up for nearly a year focused mostly on the Jack/Christian aspect, but yes, Jack had been the one eating the pins.
Also, prior to Christian managing them, they had achieved nothing of significance. With him, they won gold. Makes sense that Luch would listen to Christian.
They’ve also been selling the fact that Christian is a manipulator.
They are doing well with the Jericho, Daniel Garcia stuff. I like the slow burn there of Daniel still trying to respect Jericho but clearly having a different mindset. My issue with that feud is the logical endgame is Garcia beats Jericho at some point but oops, he’s the ROH champ so there’s no way he’s losing any time soon. So it’s like where is this going?
Why can’t he lose any time soon? I agree the Garcia ROH title win is a little ways off, but right now they’re building dissension by having Guevara take the spot as Jericho’s right hand man and getting a spot in the title match.
They’re even giving Sammy the same matches Garcia had with Danielson.
They’ll probably have Garcia go through Guevara before he gets to Jericho.
Death Triangle faction is dead in the water to me. None of the guys can work an solid match. They are all moveset guys. None have ANY psychology at all. And this is coming from a guy who think Fenix is the best high flyer they got. None of their matches ever have meaning or story. I would give a shit about death triangle breaking up if i was ever given a reason why they came together in the 1st place. Were we given background to that relationship that i simply missed? To my memory i do not ever remember them cutting a promo explaining how and why 2 Mexican wrestlers teamed up with a random UK guy. They all just randomly showed up one day saying they were death triangle.
Death Triangle formed about two and a half years ago when PAC was feuding with Orange Cassidy and the Best Friends.
To each their own regarding match style, but the three are widely considered to be some of the top in-ring workers in the world.
The Lucha Bros sometimes lose me in their tag matches, but PAC is just all-around great with not only the moves, but the psychology as well.
His matches with OC for the All-Atlantic Title were great for me.
Orange Cassidy open challenges aren’t a story but ngl his matches are fun. It’s not good work tho, but the matches are usually fun. His moveset is brutal for me to sit and watch but i do like the character, it’s just he hasn’t developed any more of his character since his debut. Is there a reason he’s so non-chalant in the ring? When is an opponent ever gonna use his style against him? He’s obviously under the protection of Tony Khan but he’s another guy that has no story or character development. We are just supposed to like him because he’s different. I can’t really get into that. Richocet has the same issue in WWE. Yeah your moveset is fun and Richocet is actually 2x the worker Orange Cassidy is but he has no character. Your character can’t just be “im a cool dude so cheer me.”
Again, to each their own regarding match styles, but OC is another guy that’s widely respected for his in-ring work.
He’s also one of the most character driven wrestlers around right now. He just completed a multi-year journey of chasing gold and coming up short just to finally win the big one against a long-time rival.
I think open challenges are a good way to keep a guy active and over while you build to their next real feud.
These are all my opinions. Just wanted to expand on my comments
I guess I’m summary there are stories in AEW but they are all either surface level with little thought, or they are disjointed and illogical or they just aren’t entertaining in the least.
I am more of a casual fan. I’m going to like a fire promo or a funny moment more than im going to like a 4 star Fenix VS Hangman match. So there’s so context to my likes and dislikes. Imo the Regal and MJF promo cut 2 weeks ago is the best promo segment they’ve ever done. There’s not enough of that since Cody left.
Ultimately, I don’t think AEW is geared toward you. A lot of their in-ring styles don’t seem to match your taste.
Still, I think you’re underselling their story telling, and I think that’s because you’re a casual fan (your words).
If you’re not watching every week, you’re going to miss some of the long-term storytelling they do.
Many of the stories being sold had subtle seeds planted months ago, and they slowly grew it to the feud we see now. Some of them are surface level, sure, those are the midcard/smaller feuds like WarJoe against The Embassy or The Acclaimed against The Varsity Athletes.
Quite frankly, pro wrestling is a very subjective form of entertainment. AEW provides much more of what I’m looking for than WWE, but I still watch WWE because they have some entertaining stuff, too.
Sami Zayn is the most over guy in wrestling right now, and I watch every week just to see what he does next. I’m also a big Rollins guy.
They’ve rebuilt some characters in a great way recently (Gunther, Sheamus, KO), but they still have the tendency to ignore everything that isn’t the main event. Nothing else is really going on outside of Bloodline/Brutes and Bayley/Bianca (which shouldn’t even still be going since Bayley keeps losing clean).
