Any Anime watchers?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Kai isn't as good as the other versions btw... I wish they actually didn't edit the one that came state side so much lol

Maybe try jujutsu kaisen... Knowing the genre of shows you like will help since anime is made in all genres
Honestly it's tough to describe - I don't really have a "genre" I prefer but really just something that I am able to get into and keeps me watching because I have trouble staying interested in too much stuff. Shows similar to HxH (but NOT HxH) tend to have weak stories and characters in the way where it's tough for me to care about them, especially when they are vehicles for just stacking one fight on top of another like YYH. HxH has purpose in an open world adventure sort of environment which is really something I haven't seen balanced well elsewhere.

On a somewhat unrelated note @Out of the Rafters at the Q when I watched it a while back I actually found Cowboy Bebop kind of boring. I didn't find the comedy funny, there wasn't much of a story and I guess selling old Western tropes in space was supposed to be cool or something but meh. It seems like I'm one of the few who actually has this opinion though so I don't really get it...

Hey, you each his own. You don't have to like everything popular.

Think of Cowboy Bebop as space jazz. If you think that's boring, cool. Nothing wrong with that. But you're missing out on an awesome universe, great character building, and a nice tight story.

On the jazz thing, the soundtrack is definitely top notch. But yeah so much of enjoyment is just personal resonance and can't make it appear out of thin air. Now Terra E, that's a good space anime.

HxH is annoyingly unique among manga. Togashi has a unique writing style and just kind of rolled with it for HxH especially when compared to earlier works like YYH. You can see that in in the Hunter Exam arc is basically a generic shonen type of plot. By the time you get to the end of Greed Island, you have a generic shonen arc (Hunter Exam), some mobster noire (Yorknew), isekai about 10 years early (Greed Island), and a generic tournament. Imo Chimera Ant arc is way too long but somehow really good. I would recommend following the manga after Chimera Ant if you are interested. The story is going in interesting directions and we are getting the first chapters in a few years right now.

Oddly, I think the closest series to this for me has always been One Piece. Yeah, its super long and I have been reading it since 2007 but still, open world and very character driven.

I would also second @sportscoach 's recommendation of JJK. Probably the best shonen to come out in the last few years. Better than SnK and Demon Slayer in my opinion.

What else do you look for in an anime, absent genre specifics?

I get exactly what you’re talking about KluSo. The more popular series have to catch my attention pretty quickly, especially the ones with huge existing libraries. Cowboy Bebop and Full Metal Alchemist are 2 that I wanted to get into, but the early episodes didn’t grab me like I was hoping so it’s hard to invest the time.

Oddly enough Naruto Shippuden is the series that really got me digging anime, but had I watched the original Naruto series I probably would not have given it the time of day. By the time I started watching Shippuden there was already several seasons produced and once I got caught up, I then went back and watched all the original Naruto series episodes and enjoyed them because of the investment in the characters.

My Hero Academia and One Punch Man are other ones that caught me right off the bat.

Huge existing libraries?

Bebop is 26 episodes. One season and done. :chuckle:

Beast Tamer I ended up liking a fair amount. It's not really a great one, but it is more on the wholesome side.

Reincarnated as a Sword is the same rating as Skelton Knight and Black Summoner to me...

I haven't watched the new Gundam...

Anyone been watching anything else this season?

I finished Aoaishi and you can see my take on that above. About halfway thru Bookworm 3 which has been solid so far. Beast Tamer, Black Summoner, and Reincarnated as a Sword are on the list, but I am way behind on stuff. I did catch Skeleton Knight and that was 7/10 for me.

Still powering through all of the Dragon Ball animes. Just started the Android saga of DBZ. Just had the episode where Goku has the heart virus whole fighting Androids 19 and 20.

The only seasons I've enjoyed were seasons like 3 and onward of Dragon Ball. Haven't really enjoyed any of DBZ so far other than the brief appearance of Future Trunks and that whole thing.

Does it get better?

Sincerely, I liked Frieza saga, but after that it was okay in the Android/Cell Saga, I didn't like the Buu Saga nor GT... So I don't think it gets any better...

To me those three are about the same rating as Skeleton Knight... They have their pros and cons, like they aren't amazing, but you aren't going to hate yourself for watching them either.

I'd almost recommend on YouTube going to TeamFourStar and watching Dragon Ball Z Abridged. Short and sweet early on which is good because it really picks up when Vegeta and Nappa come to Earth.

As someone who grew up watching the show DBZA really captures the spirit but pokes fun at the slog it can be. Just took them a couple of episodes to start nailing down the humor. The whole series is probably 70 episodes (some are broken up).

Also Dragon Ball is far superior to Z as a series, in my opinion. Z has the spectacle but Dragon Ball has the best choreographed fights and heart.
