Just wanted to point out the irony of the 2005 free agents. The Cavs were contemplating three marquee free agents, Michael Redd, Larry Hughes, and Ray Allen.

At the time, many people incuding myself dismissed Ray Allen as too old, since he was already 30 years old. What kind of building block is that?

Now 8 years later, Ray Allen is still playing in the NBA with a PER above 15, but Redd and Hughes have been out of the NBA for more than a year after several unproductive seasons.

history can be quite a joker.

Ray Allen was only playing 45-50 games a season. There were concerns about his health. We then later learned it was all part of the "OKC Model" of not caring too much about short-term winning and losing. I'm pretty sure we had it confirmed that Redd and Allen were plan 1a and 1b for that cap space.

Ironic, yes. But if my memory serves, we made every possible effort to sign Allen while he respectfully declined any/all advances.

Instead he waited until 2012 (while taking less money) to ride LeBron's baby dick.

What a fucking asshole.

Wasn't there a quote from Ray Allen around that time that if Lebron ever reached out to Allen to express interest in him on the team he would have signed with us, but Lebron never did any such thing in Cleveland?

Ariza said that for sure when he was a FA

By that point his refusal to sign a long term deal here also played a big role in spooking potential free agents.

No one wanted to sign a 4-5 year deal hear not knowing if Lebron would be here for more than a year or 2 of it.

That wasn't Allen. Allen had no desire to come to Cleveland no matter what.

I wanted Allen for sure. However, when I simulated and traversed time to find Allen elbowing Andy V in the balls, I realized it wasn't worth it.

Dude just reeks of smugness.

Edit - actually I think I was in favor of Redd....but I digress.

I think that was Redd.

Just to note, the fourth option that summer was Joe Johnson, who has had a very nice run since then himself.

I'm pretty sure Allen was able to sign for significantly more - extra year, extra something like 20 mil - by resigning with Seattle. Same with Redd and Milwaukee. It is interesting that Allen outlasted everyone.

I think that year the door prize for the team not getting Hughes on the open market was (Bobby?) Simmonds? A man who parlayed a career year into a fortune much like Hughes did.

Speaking of irony how many of us thought we'd bully the downtrodden Timberwolves into coughing up Love? If I'm their GM I'd call and kick the tires on Kyrie just to be an asshole.
