There's a difference between having a 15th man who can't play and a 15th man who just can't do what regular NBA players do due to circumstances. Russell would be an example of the first while a guy like Brevin Knight would be an example of the second.
The attempt at sarcasm was rather stale...
We are at a different level than other teams and need some sort of quality at the end compared to years before. Right now, we can't do much about it, but I expect us to get someone better at some point when the time comes. Especially if players see us constantly without Delonte.
By the way, Andre has been even worse.
Rab, I respect your opinion and you probably speak for the consensus on Russell. Actually Im sure you do. But I feel differently about him.
Yea there are those guys like Brevin Knight who are smart players who can just flat out play. They have their niche and ideninty in the NBA. Some of those older PGs that are still solid were long time starters that can easily be a backup and produce decently still. But your asking that to be our last spot? The 15th man? I think we are getting a little bit greedy with our already stacked lineup.
Really at this point the options we have is Russell, Coby, and Barrett for guards and no matter how you look at it, none of those guys are stellar. You aren't gonna get a guy that is 20 times better than the other so there isn't much we can do abou it. However we can choose the best possible guy and the guy that is best for this team and will fit in the last roster spot to help our team as much as he can. Notice the word "team".
So Barrett hasn't proven to hit shots, he hasn't been doing much else at all and I think most of us think he is the worst guard option right now. He is small and can't finish at the rim. He has ran the team though to give him credit and that is a quality we are looking for.
Coby is a big guard which is attractive no matter how you look at it. Problem is is that he is more of a SG but his handle is good for his size. He has also gotten to the hole well. But are we really looking for a scorer/SG? Especially one that won't come in and produce consistently and as of late isn't even shooting the ball well and that is his main attribute. To me he wouldn't be a bad pickup but we have plenty of scorers. His defense isn't terrific and the main reason I want Russell is because we don't have any point guards that can straight up guard the point guards(which if we have a guy that can do that, we can have our other players play straight up so we won't have to double).
Russell has shown he can run the team. Your just not gonna see this guy put up huge scoring number no matter how bad you want it. He just isn't gonna do it. He will though always play good defense and be active and causing problems and creating oppurtunities for others. He brings something we could use and don't have at the PG spot.
That is my breakdown and the way I look at it. Everybody has their opinion though.
