2015 NFL Draft Thread - April 30 - May 2 - Chicago, IL

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
9-7 with improved line play on both sides of the ball, good seasons from Duke and Crow and Manziel looks average and I'd call it a wildly successful season.

I'm in agreement that McCown will probably be in between the Chicago and Tampa version (and closer to Tampa) but let's be realistic about who he is... aside from that Chicago year, he's had 1 other year in his entire career where he's thrown more TDs than INTs (and that year he was 11/10). The last team to finish over .500 throwing more INTs than TDs is that same 2009 Jets team.

The schedule isn't exactly kind either. Our 2014 strength of schedule was 26th. This year it’s 9th. If we get off to a slow start against the cupcakes the NFL gave us in Weeks 1-3, this could be a dumpster fire. Our SOS after those 3 weeks is the hardest in the NFL.

Bad QB play is a recipe for failure... we should know as we saw the exact same thing last year. Our defense got us as far as they could with our limited QB and Johnny wasn’t able to save it. So they "fixed" it by bringing in a different limited QB and setting up Johnny, Round 2. What’s that they say about insanity again?

Unless McCown or Johnny lights it up, we’re likely looking at a lost season this year and an adjustment season next year with a new QB. The reason why I’m disappointed even after drafting solid players is that I think that avoiding this scenario should’ve been Farmer/Pettine’s top priority instead of drafting our 5th 1st/2nd round offensive lineman and a DT who will end up being a 2 down guy in our heavy rotation.

QB is not just 1 of 11 positions on O. It’s the most important position in sports and Pettine/Farmer can either acknowledge that or have “We’re not going to over-prioritize the QB position” written on their tombstones.

This is the Browns- McCown will somehow elevate his suck game to new heights. This isn't just run of the mill Cleveland whining- how many times have the Browns finished the year using QB no. 3+? Just is what it is until they prove otherwise.

Browns had limited options. After seeing what the Titans turned down for Mariota I am more than fine with not topping that. Bradford would have been a decent alternative but didn't happen. They got what looks like a capable G or C for the next few years instead, which is more than usable. With so many holes to fill still I think the quantity approach was a good way to go.

The back half of the schedule is truly brutal, no way of getting around it.

Really hoping for a competitive showing down the stretch instead of the implosion we saw in 2014.

At least they go from October 26th to December 20th without going further than Cincy. It is a little thing, but it might help them keep some energy to finish down the stretch.

The NFL really did us a favor with how the schedule is set up in terms of travel, bye week, easy start, etc.

The problem is that unless we win at least 2 of those early games and build some momentum, between the difficulty and our horrendous passing game, we're looking at a Top 5 pick again unless Johnny learns how to play QB.

The layoff to the draft is way too long. It's a drag waiting for it, not at all fun. Not even longing with anticipation, just to the point of get it over with. And now it takes place when the weather is nicer, which is stupid.

Last year it set records because of Manziel. Hopefully the ratings for it this year are awful.

Nailed it!!!!!

Running against stiff competition, Day 2 and 3 NFL draft ratings take a hit

With the Johnny Manziel effect no longer in play this year, ESPN’s ratings for Round 1 of the NFL draft Thursday night sunk a little compared to in 2014. Overall, though, it still marked the second highest combined total viewership for the opening round.

But it became evident as the draft dragged on over the course of the next two days that even the almighty NFL couldn’t continue to dominate sports television on what was arguably the biggest sports weekend of the year.

On Saturday, the Kentucky Derby drew its best rating since 1992, while a record audience bought the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight on pay-per-view. Those events conspired with a Game 7 between the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers to put the latter rounds of the draft on the backburner for most sports fans.

That’s why, according to Sports Media Watch, this was ESPN’s least-watched draft since 2012.

Specifically, viewership for Rounds 2 and 3 on Friday was down 20 percent from last year, while Saturday’s numbers plummeted 30 percent. Last year, the draft didn’t compete with the Kentucky Derby and Michael Sam was a fairly big draw on Day 3. This year, there was the Derby and two big events in the evening. Those weren’t running directly against the draft, but it looks as though a lot of people picked their TV spots as they weighed when to grab the remote on what was a really nice day in most of the country.

I happened to watch it b/c I had a big Saturday planned so didn't want to go out and be hungover for it. But I went out and got pizza, actually went to the grocery store, cleaned..I wasn't glued to the TV. I mean so many factors go into Day 1:

-It's a Thursday.
-Biggest names hyped and people want to see who they think will make the biggest impact (and should) for their teams.
-All of the pre-draft chatter about teams trading up and giving away the farm for a single player. Are they gonna do it? Let's find out!
-It's a Thursday.

Honestly, with technology now-a-days, I didn't have to be glued to a TV to see who we picked/what we were doing. Anything the Browns were involved in I had an alert on my phone/watch, so after Day 1, it's not necessary to tune my TV to it.

I was at a concert following twitter for Thursday. I was at my apt practically glued to my tv for day 2+3

I much prefer the Saturday/Sunday model they used to do though. I loved having rounds 1-3 on the same day.

By the way, you have to know all that Mariota shit was pushed by ESPN purely as a ratings driver. I'm not saying it was totally false, but they made it out to be like a real possibility.

It's never good ethically when the people covering the sport are the ones broadcasting it too. Always a chance for some shady shit.

Just like Manziel a year ago, Mariota's marketability probably just peaked the week of the draft. He made ESPN a lot of money for being a raw project a year or two away from possibly being useful on Sundays. I have a friend who works at Adidas and watches Oregon football religiously. He thought the idea of Mariota starting in the next year as horrible as Manziel starting in 2014. I concur.

Looks like Dante Fowler's season just ended...

Oof:

That Dante Fowler Jr injury did not look good
