Let's face it, I don't think anyone thought our ground game would be "average at best". And we knew our receivers were sketchy, but not that we we would be rolling some games with 4th-5th round picks and practice squad/waiver wire pickups from #1 through #5. Yet here we are: the worst-case scenario for evaluating/developing a 2nd round quarterback. So my beef with Sashi here is lack of foresight for this kind of disaster, which in retrospect should have been seen as a very real possibility. We knew Coleman had injury issues. We knew Britt was not the most focused, reliable veteran receiver in the world. And we knew Isaiah Crowell was an undrafted running back, so it shouldn't have been absurd to think maybe his promising 2016 campaign was a mirage. The Kizer pick wasn't a bad one....
....for any other team.
But the Browns are not the Green Bay Packers or Denver Broncos, so therefore he's not in the most ideal situation. You can't let him sit on the bench or even when he's put into the line up? You have the worst receiving corp in pro football as his receiving options. Plus a ground game that's very average at best.
The book is not closed on him yet, but man...we really didn't do him any favors.
You don't know you're going to get a starter at #52 and certainly not at #96 or whatever Kessler was picked at. But they're chances that they threw away for low percentage guys. Certainly Kessler was. Kizer, if they're really considering THIS shitshow as the only means of determining whether they're using a 1st on a QB next year, is more so.
There was secondary help on the board at #52, though Obi Melifonwu hasn't played at all due to an early injury, Chidobe Awuzie was getting snaps with Dallas but has been bothered by a hamstring. Teez Tabor has barely gotten into the field. Juju Smith Schuster is another player at a weak position who theoretically could have bolstered the team. None of these guys are world-beaters so far, but if we discard Kizer for a shiny object next year, those names will be fair game if you want to play the "we could have had that guy" game.
