2019 Buckeyes Football

4....

Burrow is still part buckeye.

I've been an OSU fan since the early 90s. The first season I still have vivid memories of is the 1993 season. I've never really had a lull period. In my time as a fan, there have obviously been many good, really good, great and even elite players. Outside of 99-01, there has never been more than a 1 year blip where OSU wasn't at least a borderline top 10 team. A team that successful will of course have many great players. But for my money there was 1 player who was in a category by himself.

Orlando Pace.

Pace finished 3rd in Heisman voting as a JR....as an OLineman! For reference, Peyton Manning was a lso a JR, and finished 8th! His dominance as a college Olineman has not been replicated since.

There of course have been some players who were so talented, I considered putting them up in Pace's category. 2 Heisman winners in Eddie George and Troy Smith. Shawn Springs. Andy Katzenmoyer. David Boston. Maurice Clarett. Mike Doss. AJ Hawk. Ted Ginn. Malcolm Jenkins. Beanie Wells. Braxton Miller. Zeke. The Bosas. But none of them quite ever wowed me as much as Pace did.

But for the first time, I think Orlando might have legit competition.

Chase Young is the most dominant player I've seen, at least since Pace. Seeing OTs get manhandled by Young is eerily similar to way Pace would just pancake everyone. There's no 1 OT that can block Young and no 1 DL lineman the Pace couldn't maul into the ground.

What do you guys think? Who is the best player(s) in your time as an OSU fan, and where does Chase Young fit?

He’s definitely the most dominant defensive player I’ve witnessed but I’m on the younger side so I don’t remember the early-90s as clearly.

Chris Gamble has to be up there for me; Cameron Hayward is a bit under appreciated imo. He obviously — like everyone else — didn’t have anywhere near Young’s stats but he was exceptionally disruptive on a consistent basis. One of the players of a decade? Def not, but he was low-key excellent.

Nick Mangold was an absolutely dominant center, also. Probably my favorite OL to come through since Pace.

I started paying attention to the Buckeyes in the mid-aughts, so starting around Troy Smith. I didn't become a true fan until I started school in Columbus, but I've had the pleasure of watching many great players.

Zeke is the best running back I've seen on the team. Haskins might be the best QB (should've watched Smith more during his time) for a single season. And Nick was great but got hurt while Joey had an insane career.

Chase right now feels like a half step above all of them. I almost always feel more secure with our defense on the field than our offense, and we have a GREAT offense.

Of course Chase, Zeke, Bosa.

A little older.. Ginn, Jenkins, Hawk?

Underrated/not top-tier.. Gamble, Wilhelm, Doss, Gholston, Laurinaitis, Beanie, Shazier

Perhaps this is inflated by recency bias, but Malik Hooker kicked ass and I selfishly wanted him to stay longer. Similarly on the other side of the ball with Michael Thomas and Parris Campbell who fast as hell. And while he wasn't as big a star, Devin Smith was huge during our title run.

Well I have a soft spot for players that I remember watching when I was a kid with my Dad and Grandpa. Pepper Johnson, Keith Byers, and Cris Carter. But, to me, Spielman embodied everything a college football player should be. He is my favorite Buckeye. He would get my vote as the best player.

Hooker in 2016 was probably the best year as a safety since I’ve been watching.

Looks there are some rumblings that they’re not pursuing him.

You’d hate to see James Franklin leave the big ten.

I think AJ Hawk was more dominant than Chase Young. Hawk was a beast in college.

Best defensive player to ever suit up for this school if he can finish the year as he started it.
