2020 College Football Season/Playoff Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

I can't see how that plays politically one way or the other.

I think it has more to do with 1) Michigan not being competitive football-wise, and 2) Michigan compensating for the lack of top level football by implicitly saying "there are things much more important than football."

Likewise, I don't think OSU's championship aspirations are unrelated to it being one of the primary advocates of playing.

It’s insane that I’m watching college football right now (with fans in attendance!) yet the Big Ten threw away its season. Somehow schools with fewer resources found a way to make it work.

Latest from NevadaBuck:

-Vote was never happening yesterday because the B1G isn't ready. The return to play committee is in progress prepping a presentation with protocols, testimony, contingency plans, etc

-Gene and Day have been fighting their asses off for a Fall season from Day 1 and still are. Recently, Urban Meyer has also stepped up big time and has been a bridge between the TV side (Fox) and football side

-Committee will first present a mid-October start to the Presidents. Thanksgiving start will be plan B if the Presidents reject the October start.

-Schools will have choice to opt out

-Goal is to complete season by Dec 19 and be eligible for CFP

As soon as the players started.making additional demands, the schools had no choice. They were being set up as the fall guys when - not if - the virus started spreading among students and players.
I don’t disagree with that. I guess I take issue with university leadership completely ignoring the possibility that young adults would advocate for their safety in a public juncture and still seemingly didn’t really plan for the possibility of it. I understand that’s “omg hindsight 20/20!” But still, no one said “hey, what do we do if these student-athletes aren’t nonchalant about jeopardizing their safety?”

I mean say that was discussed; it kind of seems like it was just “uhh let’s cross that bridge when we get there.”

Well, until you know exactly what it is that they're demanding, you can't really plan a particular response. Very minor demands might lead to a very different response than more extreme demands.

I could see a majority wanting a Thanksgiving start and alot saying they will opt out for a October start. Maybe the Buckeyes and the few that will want a October start can negotiate to allow them to start early then the rest join in. Buckeyes and a handful of teams finish in December while the rest keep playing. My guess neutral sites might have to be involved to get that done.

I think at the end of the day not many universities are willing to add to the problems they are currently facing to keep their campus running. Adding a weekly game day to the mix even without fans is probably too much for them to handle.

Football fans might be vocal about restarting the season but for the universities their revenue is mainly from students' tuition and them spending money day in and day out on campus. There is already alot of push to get tuition reduced because of online classes, that will get louder if they move completely to virtual. That lose in revenue would dwarf anything college football could make up.
