2020 NBA Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
They had to make a list of guys they wanted to talk to for the virtual combine. This is the list in ranked order, so while there might be a red herring, hard to imagine this isn't close to their big board.

So teams were able to have 4 hours of virtual contact with players before the combine. That contact was set up by the team and agents. While it could be a team wanting to talk to the players they are most interested in, it could also be teams deciding if it's worth moving up for or they are on the fence on after that 4 hours of contact wasn't enough. They only got a 30 minute interview from the combine. That was set up by the NBA so I think players couldn't deny a request but I think they could with the 4 hours of virtual contact before the combine.

LaMelo pulled out of the combine most likely so he didn't have to talk to a bunch teams most of which would have no chance to draft him.

Right, but don't you think it is pretty close to their board?

If that truly is their board it speaks to them not looking at PGs(with the exception of Ball who they consider transcendent and versatile because of his size/length/prodigious playmaking) and one dimensional offensive players(no Edwards or Toppin)

If true it means they don’t like Haliburton or Hayes enough Vs. the playmakers they already are developing(Sexton, Garland, Porter Jr.) and it would mean that they see the major need for a wing or big who had the skills and traits to have a positive effect On their overall defense.

What if you thought Haliburton was the superior talent than Okoro, but not Garland. Do you take Okoro? Interesting dynamic there.

I really like Haliborton. I think NYK end up taking him as a consolation prize and he turns into a really great guy to pair with Barrett. Not a star, but a guy like Andre Miller to just be really solid for 14 years

Right, but don't you think it is pretty close to their board?

I wouldn't be so sure because everything to do with the draft is disinformation and creating a narrative to hope that your guy will drop. If they were impressed with someone after the first 4 hours of interviews, I would bet they wouldn't even put him on their combine list. My guess is they would write off guys too. I think they would use that extra 30 minutes for guys who they are on the fence for and maybe some potential late draft trades. There might be some guys who didn't grant them interviews for the 4 hour period that they would also try to get an interview with for that 30 minutes.

I don't think they would reveal their board just for 30 minute interviews. I think they would put alot of thought into the list so it wouldn't reveal anything. They don't want anyone finding out they love some player and they most likely are hoping someone takes a player they dislike before them.

Yeah I mean I think it is possible, but it fits their needs and what has been reported. I could see it being out of order. Like, if Wiseman is there, they take him kind of thing, but it looks similar to my own board for the Cavs. What is most surprising about those names?

I don't think any of the names are surprising. It's just that I think most of us have been surprised who the Cavs pick in most years, outside of Kyrie and Wiggins. The board either just doesn't fall the way that the Cavs hope or they go after an unexpected player.

I've just come to the conclusion that the Cavs put out alot of disinformation when it comes to the draft or the Cavs beat writers just throw out names so they have something to talk about. Draft day seems to be when we tend to get the most accurate Cavs draft info. The days after the draft we seem to get some insight into their draft thinking.

The last few drafts I think it was known we liked Sexton, Garland and Porter a few weeks out. Only surprise was Windler.

The Bennett/TT/Waiters picks were all surprises but were under a different GM

Totally confused as to how people watch Mississippi State and come to the conclusion that Robert Woodard is a better prospect than Reggie Perry, who's significantly bigger, younger, and more skilled.

I agree that rumors said we liked Sexton, Garland, and Garland but they were also lost in the mix of other information or narratives being put out there.

In 2018, alot of people thought we would trade the pick for someone like Kemba Walker to try to keep LeBron. There was alot of talk about how much we liked Michael Porter Jr and both Bridges. Trae Young and SGA was also talked about alot. We didn't find out till after that the Cavs weren't looking to trade the pick and really how much they liked Sexton.

Last year, RJ Barrett was what the Cavs were talking about and how they wanted to trade up for him. Garland didn't gain momentum until after the Hawks moved up to #4, which is around when we found out the Cavs had Garland in for a late workout. Garland was almost seen as a lock to go to the Lakers before they trade their pick for AD.

KPJ was one of the picks which fell the Cavs way. I don't think anyone thought he would drop that far. The last minute trade to get him materialized. Remember Shams or Woj reported that the Cavs took someone other than Windler at the #26 pick then it go walked back 10 minutes later.

I'll admit that Koby isn't as secretive as Grant was. Waiters, TT, and Bennett pretty much came out of nowhere. Koby and the current staff do like to spin the narrative and not show their card as much as they can though.

Yeah on Windler Shams indicated they were taking Keldon Johnson. The Spurs were going to take Windler.

I really like Perry. I'd love to pick him up like they did Porter

It's been fun watching film on him. On one hand, at Mississippi State, he's the offensive focal point at PF. He suffered a bit from playing with a mediocre PG and a paint-clogging center, but this gave him the opportunity to showcase his perimeter skills. On the other hand, in the U19 World Cup, he played center in a free-flowing offense led by Haliburton and dominated in that role too. You start to realize, wow, I'm looking at the most versatile offensive big in the class. I'm not sure anyone else comes close. He's not perfect, but man, he can beat you in so many different ways.
