The Indians return home after a day off having won 13 of 18 to face the 17-19 Brewers for the first time this season. The Brew Crew was also off yesterday.

The Brewers appear to be a below average team having gone 5-5 against the Pirates, who have the worst winning percentage in baseball. The Brewers are two games under .500 in a division that only has one team over .500. The Brewers are 2-5 against the Twins and 2-2 against the White Sox.

They are especially weak offensively, ranking 27th in runs per game. They rank 19th in team ERA so their pitching is better, but still below average.

Tonight's game has Carrasco going against RHP Corbin Burnes,1-0, 2.78. Burnes started in the bullpen but has since started four games. He's been effective in both roles. As a starter teams are hitting .169/.497 against him. Right-handed batters are hitting .128; lefties .185. In 32 innings he's allowed 18 hits, only one home run, and struck out 46. This guy can flat out pitch. In his last start he shut out the Pirates for six innings, allowing three hits.

The Indians definitely have their work cut out tonight because Burnes has been outstanding. His highest pitch count has been 93 so hopefully the Indians can work deep into counts and get him out of there after 5-6 innings.

Tomorrow it's Civale against RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-3, 3.67). Woodruff has a 4.45 ERA in six August starts.

Sunday it's Bieber against LHP Brett Anderson (2-2, 4.18). Anderson is a 32-year-old lefty in his 11th season with a career record of 61-63 - the very definition of a journeyman. He has started six games with a total of 28 innings pitched, so they don't let him go deep into games. He has only 20 K's in those 28 innings so I imagine he is a soft tosser who pitches to weak contact - exactly the kind of pitcher who always baffles the Indians. He has a 57-36 fly ball to ground ball ratio so he forces batters to bang it into the ground.

I'm expecting a frustrating game with a lot of ground outs by Tribe hitters.

If we get into any close games late the Brewers have a couple of record setting relievers. Josh Hader is the only pitcher since 1901 to not allow a hit in his first 12 appearances. He's faced 47 batters, retired 35, walked 10 and hit 2, but still no hits. The other one is Devin Williams who has a 31-4 strikeout to hit ratio (7.75) which is the best in history. James Karinchak has the fourth best (4.38), by the way, with 35 K's to 8 hits. The best over a full season is Aroldis Chapman in 2014 with 106 K's against 21 hits (5.05). So Williams, in a small sample, is over 50% better than the all-time best for a full season.

We need to have a lead after seven innings.

We could see former Indians prospect J.P. Feyereisen, who was striking out tons of hitters in the Tribe farm system a few years back. He's a 27-year-old rookie now and has pitched twice in the last week. He's thrown five innings this year. He was a throw-in along with Clint Frazier, Sheffield and Heller in the Andrew Miller trade with the Yankees four years ago.

When there was much talk a few years back about trade scenarios with Milwaukee (Salazar and Domingo were two names ) the guy I wanted was Burnes.

If you like our pop gun offense, you will love the Brew Crew. They have one regular (Yelich) with an OPS over .741. We have six.

Hader is only used at the back end of games. In 12 appearances he is 9 for 10 in save opps. Six relievers for Milwaukee have more IP than him.

My cousin and I used to visit our uncles or my father in law to sit on a porch and listen to the Tribe on the radio. Our beer was no good at their houses...and my uncles usually had Blatz. So when we play Milwaukee, I think of those hot summer nights.

I'm from Milwaukee and I ought to know,
Why Blatz beer tastes great, wherever you go,
Smoother, fresher, less filling, its clear,
Blatz is Milwaukees finest beer.

(It sucked, but it was cold and free.)

Man, I miss those days.

Cookie is coming off a very good outing with a 6-inning, 2-hit, scoreless effort against the Cardinals, who are 20th in runs per game. They're a somewhat better offensive team than Milwaukee so I'm optimistic we will see a similar performance tonight. He only threw 85 pitches against the Cards so he should be ready.

I'm not that optimistic we can score much against Burnes, although we will be able to put seven left-handed hitters plus Franmil Reyes in the lineup against him. I'm assuming Leon starts at catcher.

This could be another one of those games where we need excellent pitching and defense along with a big hit to win a close one.

Living in Phoenix, I get to go to allot of spring training games. One year I went with my son to a Brewers game and sat right at the railing at 3rd base. It was by the Brewer dugout, so I was the lone Indian in a sea of Brewer fans, but that is not a bad thing as Brewer fans are amazingly friendly.

So there we are next too these 2 best friends from Milwaukee who we ended up talking with and having a great time. The 3rd base coach is a long time Brewer coach named Ed Seder. They were fans and knew who Ed was and told me he is a fan favorite. So around the 5th inning I start yelling at Ed and he can clearly hear me. Now I am not yelling anything mean, just joking with him and telling him he should join us in the crowd and take the rest of the day off. He is trying to ignore me but is clearly laughing at what I am saying..."Hey Ed, you have been with the team 20 years, they are not going to fire you for taking half a spring training game off"..."Hey Ed, we are having more fun than you here, you should join us".

Anyways I kept it up, making jokes as a couple of balls were hit his way that he had to avoid, etc...the whole time I can see he is laughing. Now clearly I am an Indians fan by the shirt and hat my son and I are wearing, but that didn't make a difference to Ed. The 9th Inning comes and Ed walks up to my son, hands him a ball and says your dad is hilarious and he earned this for you. (Fan interaction at Spring Training is amazing)

Anyways after the game, Lucroy was standing 5 feet from us signing a couple of autographs. I turn to my 8 year old son and ask "Do you want that Brewer's autograph?"...my son looks at his shirt, then looks at Lucroy's jersey and turns to me and says "Nahhh"....Lucroy starts laughing and says to me "Really?"...I said back "Hey the boy stands on his principles"....he laughed again, tipped his cap and we left.

Basically I will always respect the Brewers and their fans. Oh, and you guys need to get out here for spring training, lol

I have met a few people that have come here on vacation from this board, if we ever get a group together, I would be more than happy to host a BBQ at my house, beer and liquor and all and then go as a group to the game before or after the game. (probably after would be the bbq)

Great story, Lee.

I have a few other stories from spring training with me and my son, all pretty funny....spring training is amazing.

Kettle grill is warming up right now, smoking a rib-eye(reverse sear) for tonight's game.

Long first inning, but Cookie does not crumble.

Cookie can't get anything down against the first two batters...single...walk.

He does against Yelich finally...swinging K.

Called strike three on the outside black...or not...but we will take it.

Cookie and Hedges having some communication problems as Vogelbach goes full...chases for strike three.
