The Indians return home after a day off having won 13 of 18 to face the 17-19 Brewers for the first time this season. The Brew Crew was also off yesterday.
The Brewers appear to be a below average team having gone 5-5 against the Pirates, who have the worst winning percentage in baseball. The Brewers are two games under .500 in a division that only has one team over .500. The Brewers are 2-5 against the Twins and 2-2 against the White Sox.
They are especially weak offensively, ranking 27th in runs per game. They rank 19th in team ERA so their pitching is better, but still below average.
Tonight's game has Carrasco going against RHP Corbin Burnes,1-0, 2.78. Burnes started in the bullpen but has since started four games. He's been effective in both roles. As a starter teams are hitting .169/.497 against him. Right-handed batters are hitting .128; lefties .185. In 32 innings he's allowed 18 hits, only one home run, and struck out 46. This guy can flat out pitch. In his last start he shut out the Pirates for six innings, allowing three hits.
The Indians definitely have their work cut out tonight because Burnes has been outstanding. His highest pitch count has been 93 so hopefully the Indians can work deep into counts and get him out of there after 5-6 innings.
Tomorrow it's Civale against RHP Brandon Woodruff (2-3, 3.67). Woodruff has a 4.45 ERA in six August starts.
Sunday it's Bieber against LHP Brett Anderson (2-2, 4.18). Anderson is a 32-year-old lefty in his 11th season with a career record of 61-63 - the very definition of a journeyman. He has started six games with a total of 28 innings pitched, so they don't let him go deep into games. He has only 20 K's in those 28 innings so I imagine he is a soft tosser who pitches to weak contact - exactly the kind of pitcher who always baffles the Indians. He has a 57-36 fly ball to ground ball ratio so he forces batters to bang it into the ground.
I'm expecting a frustrating game with a lot of ground outs by Tribe hitters.
If we get into any close games late the Brewers have a couple of record setting relievers. Josh Hader is the only pitcher since 1901 to not allow a hit in his first 12 appearances. He's faced 47 batters, retired 35, walked 10 and hit 2, but still no hits. The other one is Devin Williams who has a 31-4 strikeout to hit ratio (7.75) which is the best in history. James Karinchak has the fourth best (4.38), by the way, with 35 K's to 8 hits. The best over a full season is Aroldis Chapman in 2014 with 106 K's against 21 hits (5.05). So Williams, in a small sample, is over 50% better than the all-time best for a full season.
We need to have a lead after seven innings.
We could see former Indians prospect J.P. Feyereisen, who was striking out tons of hitters in the Tribe farm system a few years back. He's a 27-year-old rookie now and has pitched twice in the last week. He's thrown five innings this year. He was a throw-in along with Clint Frazier, Sheffield and Heller in the Andrew Miller trade with the Yankees four years ago.
