The 7-game series is also an issue for making the regular season matter. It's crazy, it's like a six month exhibition season. Then you get guys getting injuries during the pointless regular season that end up determining the playoffs (witness Murray -- what was the point of that?). The irony is that the NBA playoffs are pretty much the best thing in sports. But man do you have to suffer to get there.
In some ideal world, I wonder if they could cut the regular season to like 40 games to determine seeding/let teams mesh, and then somehow make the playoffs longer. Maybe let everyone get in and have 7 game series each round. Radical change but wouldn't it be a lot more fun?
It's a catch-22 though. We want the better teams to win in the playoffs to set up the matchups between the best players in the game. However, players on good teams are also aware of the fact that in a 7-game series, the better team will likely prevail regardless of homecourt advantage.
If you were to drop down to even a 3, or even just a 5-game series, I think you'd see more teams trying to grab every advantage available due to the potential volatility.
