Yep, it was a national audience for a late August game between two .500 teams with no playoff hopes. The only slightly interesting aspects of the game to non-Indians and non-Angels fans were the location and Ohtani, so that's what they focused on. But around the fifth inning they woke up to the fact that Quantrill was pitching one hell of a game.A national audience has to appeal to a broader audience.. Arod is by no means a mensan.. and wouldn't be the kind of color analyst you're looking for w/r to popularism as it relates to baseball.. He's just a wealthy former player who could really play, has a "safe" ability to articulate & does no harm first.. Milque toast.. sure.. hard hitting.. only when he played.. Matt Vasgersian, on the other hand, has been a play by play guy for a long time (Santa Maria !!) in both television as well as radio, mostly on the west coast (Padres, Angels..etc). His tone is clearly toned down for national broadcasts.. In a long winded way.. the Indians announcers.. both radio and TV blow by ARod.. but are equal to but not better than Matty-V.. imho..
However, there was a lot of fluff like asking the Angels' first baseman if he was a star in Little League and whether he'd rather get a strikeout or hit a home run. It was like, "These teams aren't going anywhere so let's celebrate Little League baseball and talk about Ohtani".
